I quite enjoyed 2009’s Avatar which, despite its simple setup, brought an immersive experience on an alien world to life. While still an enjoyable popcorn movie, I was less impressed with 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water which followed the Sully clan, still hounded by human armed forces, to new lives as part of a Na’vi water tribe. Avatar: Fire and Ash feels very much a continuation of the second movie, continuing the story of the Sully clan against a very familiar antagonist.

I’m a sucker for heist films, but even for me Lift is a mixed bag with questionable casting choices and some notable plot issues. Playing against type, a toned-down Kevin Hart stars as super-thief Cyrus. After successfully staging a two-part theft in both Venice and London, and under pressure from Interpol, Cyrus and his team are recruited by Agent Abby Gladwell (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) to steal from a terrorist moving a half-billion dollars in gold to buy a device capable of creating natural disasters all over the world from a secret hacker collective.

last-night-blu-rayFrom writer/director Massy Tadjedin comes a tale of temptation as a married couple each find themselves fighting an attraction to someone other than their significant other during an evening spent apart.

What works so well about Tadjedin’s script is how lived-in Joanna (Keira Knightley) and Michael’s (Sam Worthington) life together feels. This isn’t your typical Hollywood romcom set of idealistic young lovers or bitter married couple. Despite a little bickering, it’s obvious the two love each other, but until the end of the film we’re not sure if doubts and temptation in the form of an old flame (Guillaume Canet) or an attractive co-worker (Eva Mendes) are enough to lure them into a decision that could end their marriage.
