Colossal movie reviewAnne Hathaway stars as Gloria, an unemployed alcoholic who is forced to move back home to her parents’ abandoned house after her boyfriend (Dan Stevens) kicks her out. Back home, she reconnects with childhood friend Oscar (Jason Sudeikis) while struggling not to fall back into old patterns. All the pieces are here for an entertaining dramedy focused on Gloria, her questionable choices, and the people in her life. However, writer/director Nacho Vigalondo has something far more unusual in mind.

At the same time Gloria returns home a giant creature appears on the streets of Seoul, South Korea. Watching news footage, Gloria can’t help but notice some similarities between the creatures mannerisms and her own and quickly discovers that at one spot in her town, and one specific time, she causes the creature to manifest halfway around the world and controls its actions (be that wanton destruction or goofy dancing). From here the movie could devolve into a wacky comedy, but once again Vigalondo has something more interesting in mind as the film takes an unexpectedly dark turn.

Seeing Yoda’s adventures in flashbacks, the Jedi Master uses the Force to restore balance to the planet by reanimating the Giants of Living Stone.

Fueled by years of bitterness since the Jedi Master left, Garro has seen his world transformed in ways he never imagined and decides to take that anger out on Luke, hoping to strip the pilot (who he mistakes for Yoda’s student) of his power to finish off the rock creatures and restore order to his world.

Darth Maul #2 comic reviewLearning that a Jedi Padawan is being held by the Xrexus Cartel, Darth Maul ignores the explicit orders of his master and makes his way to Nar Shaddaa looking for answers. Unable to reveal his true nature to those he needs to beat information out of, Maul instead hires some help in his search for Jedi.

Fans of Star Wars: The Clone Wars will likely get a kick out of seeing both Cad Bane and Aurra Sing as part of the bounty hunter team Maul puts together to lead him to the auction in the Drazkel System where the Padawan Eldra Kaitis is the prize… although I doubt the Sith has any intention on paying for her. The pair provide the information Maul is looking for, but don’t know who their cloaked benefactor is or why he is so interested in the event.

Samurai Jack - Episode XCIV television review

“Episode XCIV” offers a return to form for our hero, a flashback to his childhood, a deadly battle with the Daughters of Aku in the middle of a snowstorm, and the return of the wolf from the previous episodes who gives Jack (Phil LaMarr) the help and time he needs to heal before his enemies come knocking at his door. Highlighted by the battle between Jack and the Daughters, the preceding respite gives the shattered samurai the strength to stand against his enemies (and allows the show to further show off the new enemies). The flashback to his father’s heroism and lessons about destiny turns out to be the cherry on top reminding Jack who he as a critical juncture where giving up could have been an easy choice. Taking out each Daughter with deadly efficiency, my only complaint is the episode’s cliffhanger ending leaving the fate of both the final Daughter and Jack in doubt, forcing us to wait an entire week for more Samurai Jack.

It is a dark time for the Rebellion. Using his knowledge of Agent Kallus‘ (David Oyelowo) treachery, Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) springs his trap and sends the fleet to Atollon as the Rebels prepare to attack Lothal. Using an Imperial blockage complete with Interdictors, Thrawn traps both Phoenix Squadron and General Dodonna‘s (Michael Bell) Massassi Group at Atollon as his forces push their advantage. In a last-ditch effort, Ezra (Taylor Gray) manages to escape the blockade and seek help from an old friend.
