Star Wars Rebels - Legacy

The Empire’s invasion of Garel forces the Rebellion to flee their base. Separating from the rest of the group, Kanan (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and Ezra (Taylor Gray) return to Lothal, led their by the padawan’s visions of his his parents who he believes may still be alive. The run from Garel provides plenty of action both on the ground, where Ezra shows off his growing abilities with Force against the Inquisitors, and in the air where Hera (Vanessa Marshall) uses the Ghost in a risky manuever to free the Rebellion’s flag ship form a Star Destroyer’s tractor beam.

Doctor Who - Hell Bent

The final episode of Series Nine returns The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) to Gallifrey, although the episode turns out to be more about Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) than the Time Lords. I had a very mixed reaction to “Hell Bent” which immediately undercuts the emotion of Clara’s death, and the power of her sacrifice, by The Doctor using his return to Gallifrey to find a way to cheat death and bring her back. Using the Time Lord’s technology to pull Clara out of the final moment of her timeline, The Doctor saves his companion one last time.

Star Wars Rebels - The Future of the Force

Ahsoka (Ashley Eckstein) reaches out to Kanan (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and Ezra (Taylor Gray) when the Empire begins targeting force-sensitive children and sends the Inquisitors Fifth Brother (Philip Anthony-Rodriguez) and Seventh Sister (Sarah Michelle Gellar) to kidnap the infants from their families. Splitting up, the episode mostly follows the adventures of Kanan, Ezra, Zeb (Steve Blum), and Chopper on the planet Takobo. Before the end, however, Ahsoka will rendevouz with our heroes showcasing just how far the young padawan has come in her mastery of the Force since her first appearance in The Clone Wars.

Doctor Who - Face the Raven

It had been 33 years since the death of an ongoing companion (not counting Peri‘s death which was retconned out of the series almost immediately). That streak is over. “Face the Raven” says a final goodbye to the Impossible Girl (well, except for a dreamlike cameo in “Heaven Sent”). Like it or not, Clara Oswald‘s (Jenna Coleman) time of traveling through space and time have come to an end. I’ll give writer Sarah Dollard credit for making Clara’s exit mean something and propelling the season in an unexpected direction. I’ll also take a moment to mourn the show’s loss of Clara who leaves big shoes to fill for whomever steps in as the next companion. You will be missed Jenna Coleman.

Darth Vader #12

Darth Vader #12Wrapping up the series’ second arc, Darth Vader is able to turn events to his advantage and convince Imperial Inspector Thanoth to ignore some thief who stole a few credits from the Empire and focus the fleet’s attention on the threat of the rebel group operating on the Outer Rim known as the Plasma Devils. Once again the Dark Lord of the Sith narrowly avoids Aphra‘s apprehension along with any possibility of her actions being tied back to him.

Given her ability to reveal Vader’s betrayal of the Empire, the only part of Darth Vader #12 that rings hollow is his decision to keep the thief alive. While I’m sure writer Kieron Gillen has more plans for Aphra, and has spent considerable time developing the character, the natural decision for Vader would be to kill the woman immediately.
