SHAZAM!

Black Adam #1

Despite reading about the character for decades, I’ll admit to being a bit lost with Black Adam #1 which takes place before the death of the Justice League (which happened several weeks ago) and features Adam jumping between his super-powered state and into the body of Teth-Adam (who looks pretty damn good for how old it is). As originally conceived, Black Adam couldn’t transform back to Teth as the body would wither away and die. Apparently that’s been “fixed” with modern continuity.

SHAZAM! #14

SHAZAM! #14 comic reviewSHAZAM! #14 concludes the “SHAZAM and the Seven Magic Lands” arc as Billy Batson is able to free his father from Mr. Mind‘s influence (but, sadly unable to to make C.C. Batson any less of a douche putting a damper on the family’s victory).

The issue also marks the return of the mentally-deranged Superboy Prime aware of the previous DCU timelines and calling out the Marvel Family by their historic names. He offers a threat so large we see Billy and Black Adam work together to stop him. The Superboy of an Earth destroyed in Crisis, who became frustrated with the world that was reborn without him before going all murder-crazy, has apparently been locked-up in the Monster Lands for years.

LEGO DC: SHAZAM! - Magic & Monsters Blu-ray reviewBilly Batson (Zach Callison) was previously introduced as a supporting character in LEGO DC: Batman – Family Matters. There are three separate plots in LEGO DC: SHAZAM! – Magic & Monsters. The straight-to-video allows for the origins of the hero formerly known as Captain Marvel to be explored along with his introduction to the Justice League. There’s also a plot by Mr. Mind (Greg Ellis) who, with the help of Dr. Sivana (Dee Bradley Baker), transforms the Justice League into kids where they will be more susceptible to his mind control and retrieve the food he needs for his transformation. And last, but not least, is the appearance of Black Adam (Imari Williams), the Wizard’s former warrior, who breaks out of the Rock of Eternity and attacks the Wizard and his new champion.

SHAZAM! #13

SHAZAM! #13 television reviewBilly Batson is forced to face some hard truths and choices in SHAZAM! #13 as the Monster Society of Evil has been unleashed on the world and Mr. Mind reveals he’s been controlling the actions of Billy’s estranged father all this time (and now has the power of one of Shazam’s champions).

All of the Marvel Family is in action here against a wild assortment of villains including King Kull, the Crocodile Men, Jeepers, Mr. Atom, and others. With the perfect hostage, Mr. Mind forces Billy to break down the magical barriers between worlds leading to a tease of what writer Geoff Johns has in mind to allow the comic to go out with a bang before ending its run with issue #15.
