Sherlock - His Last Vow

Well that… kinda sucked. Following a messy, but thoroughly enjoyable, episode, Stephen Moffat dives into his old bag of tricks for the season finale which features Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) in defeat, morphs Watson‘s (Martin Freeman) new bride Mary (Amanda Abbington) into the Holmes’ equivalent of River Song (Alex Kingston), and offers yet another super-villain who is arguably both smarter and more dangerous than Moriarty (Andrew Scott). Oh, and I should mention Holmes fails to solve the case.

“The dinosaur in Doug Newbern’s backyard did indeed escape my notice.”

Elementary - Dead Clade Walking

When Watson (Lucy Liu) pokes around one of Sherlock Holmes‘ (Jonny Lee Miller) old unsolved murders she finds something the detective missed the first time around: a Paleozoic rock with the fossilized skeleton of a complete dinosaur inside. The discovery of the fossil leads the pair into the world of smuggling, and after a notorious smuggler known only as The Magpie whose agents liberate the fossil from the NYPD while posing as Custom Agents. When the smuggler turns up dead, along with a completely destroyed fossil of the Nanotyrannus and DNA that matches a man who can’t possibly be their killer, Holmes is forced to reexamine the case.

Sherlock - The Sign of Three

Much like the best man’s speech Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) gives at Watson‘s (Martin Freeman) wedding reception, “The Sign of Three” is messy and meandering while still delivering a terrific mystery and a slew of the series’ most humorous scenes. The episode could certainly be tightened up, but Holmes’ recitation of his recent cases with Watson to a captive (and often uncomfortable) audience certainly ranks as one of the show’s most memorable and largely entertaining episodes.

Sherlock - The Empty Hearse

Two years after giving us the deaths of Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott), Sherlock returns with three new episodes. The first mainly concerns Sherlock’s return from the dead, an idea which takes Watson (Martin Freeman) more than a little while to warm up to. Of course, showing up dressed as a waiter the night Watson had chosen to propose to Mary (Amanda Abbington) might have been a bit of a miscalculation on the detective’s part (which leads to the episode’s best sequence of Watson continually attacking Holmes over and over as his friend explains what he’s been up to since).

Elementary - All in the Family

The discovery of a mobster’s decapitated body by Detective Bell (Jon Michael Hill) working in his new job with Demographics brings him back into contact with Captain Gregson (Aidan Quinn), Watson (Lucy Liu), and Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller). Making no inroads with Bell over the recent shooting, Holmes tries a new tack by attempting to insert himself into Bell’s new job and force a confrontation with the detective who still harbors anger over the loss of full use of his right hand.
