Peter Parker is in the hospital fighting for his life. The Beyond Corporation has bought the rights to Spider-Man. And Ben Reilly is back as Spider-Man. Things certainly have changed. Personally, I’d much prefer to see Reilly as the Scarlet Spider which was far more successful that his last stint stepping in for Peter. But it looks like that’s not in the cards. Ben Reilly is now Spider-Man (and with an entire conglomerate working on gadgets and doodads for him).
After seeing Ben in action for the past couple of issues, The Amazing Spider-Man #77 takes a step back and examines the life of a corporate super-hero trying to live up to both internal and external expectations. If Ben is likely to have struggles, they may be more from Beyond than what he faces on the streets. It’s more building block than standalone issue, although it does offer Spidey versus Morbius for a late fight cliffhanger.

Giant-Size Amazing Spider-Man: Chameleon Conspiracy offers an over-sized conclusion to the Chameleon Conspiracy which involves armies of Chameleons and Jack O’Lanterns fighting on a secret space station which will crash into Earth before the end of the issue. Also onboard are Foreigner and Chance hoping to get their hands on the Catalyst (technology which can predict the future) and its creator. Got all that? Needless to say this isn’t the best place to jump into the story.
We start out with the reveal that Ned Leeds is alive (and still not the Hobgoblin). Um, okay? So is Uncle Ben returning next issue? We also get Teresa Parker fighting alongside Spider-Man (although she does get tempted by the Chameleon at a crucial moment).

Okay, it’s been a bit since I’ve picked up a Spider-Man comic. Looks like Peter’s life isn’t any less complicated than I remember. His friends have been possessed by the villain known as Kindred. The issue opens with Spidey going to Dr. Strange for help with a possessed Silk. While getting all magical and ominous, Strange’s attempts to cure Silk fail leaving him questioning just what is going on as the comic appears to be tying events back to that time Spider-Man literally made a deal with the Devil and reset all of reality. Yeah… Spider-Man fans usually don’t like to speak of this.
Making bad decisions apparently isn’t something Peter has grown out of either as he enlists the help of Black Cat to steal a mystical artifact from Strange which sends the Wall-Crawler to the his dreamscape in the astral plane where the villain awaits (and now he has no wizard to help him). Great plan.
