Stuck with one of Star Wars‘ unnecessarily complicated naming conventions, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord – Chapter 1: The Dark Revenge reintroduces the character of Maul setting events of the series prior to those in Star Wars: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story or Solo: A Star Wars Story. As the series opens, Maul (Sam Witwer) is working from the shadows on the planet Janix pitting various underground mobsters against each other while attempting to regain his lost power. By the end of “The Dark Revenge,” one mobster will be dead with another in Maul’s clutches, a police station will be decimated by Maul and his crew (in the highlight action sequence), and the former Sith Lord will come across the unexpected.

The Acolyte - Episode 1

Set during the High Republic Era 100 years before the rise of the Empire, The Acolyte offers a look at a galaxy filled with Jedi. Our opening action sequence involves one of those Jedi, Master Indara (Carrie-Anne Moss), who is confronted by an assassin (Amandla Stenberg) on Ueda. It’s a strong opening sequence that tells us a few things about our assassin who uses the Force, along with throwing daggers, but unlike a Jedi or Sith does not carry a lightsaber. The outcome of the battle leads to the Jedi scouring the galaxy for the assassin which is where things get a little muddy until the show is ready to reveal the first of its many secrets.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch - Shadows of Tantiss

“Shadows of Tantiss” makes good use of a ticking tock trope using the blood sampling we saw introduced in “Confined.” With Omega‘s (Michelle Ang) blood now in the system, she’s forced to escape with Crosshair (Dee Bradley Baker) before the sample is tested leading to a hurried, but ultimately successful, escape from Tantiss. However, now that the Empire knows the secret they have been searching for so relentlessly is locked in Omega’s genetic code you would expect them to redouble their efforts to capturing her again.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch - Confined

The Season Three premiere of Star Wars: The Bad Batch focuses on the daily routine of Omega (Michelle Ang) now a prisoner of the Imperial Research Facility on Weyland. We don’t get the rest of the Bad Batch, except for Crosshair (Dee Bradley Baker) who is also a guinea pig for the doctors. Because the focus is the structure and banality of Omega’s current plight without hope of escape, the premiere provides less action than almost any episode of the series, although there are some important pieces to the overall puzzle revealed.
