The Acolyte - Episode 1

Set during the High Republic Era 100 years before the rise of the Empire, The Acolyte offers a look at a galaxy filled with Jedi. Our opening action sequence involves one of those Jedi, Master Indara (Carrie-Anne Moss), who is confronted by an assassin (Amandla Stenberg) on Ueda. It’s a strong opening sequence that tells us a few things about our assassin who uses the Force, along with throwing daggers, but unlike a Jedi or Sith does not carry a lightsaber. The outcome of the battle leads to the Jedi scouring the galaxy for the assassin which is where things get a little muddy until the show is ready to reveal the first of its many secrets.

While the first three episodes of Tales of the Empire deal with the backstory of Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto), the final three turn their attention to former Jedi Barriss Offee (Meredith Salenger) whose fall to the Dark Side was chronicled in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Tales of the Empire picks up that thread with Barriss being approached in prison by after Order 66 and the fall of the Jedi. In “Devoted” former Jedi Lyn Rakish (Rya Kihlstedt) offers Barriss a new path bringing her into the Empire’s new training program for Force wielders which is revealed to be the formation of the Inquisitors.

Star Wars (Free Comic Book Day 2024)

The Star Wars Free Comic Book Day issue provides two separate stories for fans, one of which ties heavily into recent storylines and one that works as a short standalone adventure, both set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi.

“Return to Echo Base” gives us Luke, Leia, Lando, and Chewbacca taking the Millennium Falcon back to Hoth to rescue a handful of Rebels who they left behind in their retreat from the Rebel base. There’s not much to the issue but it does feature a short shoot-out with Snowtroopers and our heroes loosing their pursuers in a blizzard by hiding in a cave which Luke remembers from his previous trip to the planet.
