Darth Vader #1

Darth Vader #1 comic reviewJust as the current volume of Star Wars takes place immediately after the events of The Empire Strikes back so does Marvel’s new Darth Vader series. Darth Vader #1 centers around the Dark Lord of the Sith seeking both answers and revenge against those who kept his son hidden. Even going so far as to ignore the Emperor‘s call, Darth Vader gathers a small collection of troops and scours the galaxy from Tatooine to Coruscant in search of answers.

Writer Greg Pak and artist Raff Ienco offer a trip down memory lane for both Vader and fans as searching for answers about Luke leads back across Anakin‘s own history. The comic ends with a tease which I suspect will be explained by the Amidala look-alike being identified as one of the characters who once posed as Padme’s doubles.

Star Wars #2

Star Wars #2 comic reviewSet shortly after the events of The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars #2 continues the story of Luke Skywalker reeling from the revelation that Darth Vader was once his father Anakin Skywalker, and a fractured Rebellion struggling to continue the fight against the Galactic Empire.

If nothing else, this volume of Star Wars may be the one to examine the redemption of Lando (along with Luke coming to terms with his heritage and growing in the Force). With the Rebellion scattered and the cells unable to contact each other without alerting the Empire, Leia is needed by the leadership of the Rebellion putting Lando and Chewbacca in control of the search for their missing friend (which nearly immediately shows off Lando’s smooth talking while questioning his loyalty and the level he will go for self-preservation).

The Mandalorian - The Prisoner television review

“Chapter 6” offers a fun heist episode that also introduces a few characters from Mandalorian‘s (Pedro Pascal) past. However, it’s not without some head-scratching problems. The Mandolorian answers a call from his old crew led by Ranzar Malk (Mark Boone Junior) that coincidentally comes at the exact moment when the Mandalorian is looking for some quick cash. Learning the job is breaking out a prisoner from a New Republic Prison Ship, that the crew want to use the Razor Crest for their getaway, and the job doesn’t even pay well enough to cover the gas are all reasons enough for the bounty hunter to walk away (plus, you know, not trusting any member of the crew from shooting him in the back or stealing his cargo). While the episode needs our protagonist to to accept the job, the writers don’t cover themselves by properly selling that job to either the Mandalorian or the audience.

The Mandalorian - The Gunslinger television review

Forced to land on Tatooine after a space battle with a bounty hunter after the Child, the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) picks up so local work to pay for the repairs by partnering with inexperienced bounty hunter Toro Calican (Jake Cannavale) in tracking down the assassin Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen). Toro needs the credit for such a capture to earn his way into the Bounty Hunters’ Guild and is less interested in the money tied to the bounty which the Mandalorian desperately needs. It seems like a good job, though there will be complications.
