Star Wars Rebels - Heroes of Mandalore TV review

Star Wars Rebels opens its fourth and final season with Sabine Wren (Tiya Sircar) leading Ezra (Taylor Gray), Kanan (Freddie Prinze Jr.), Chopper, and several Mandalorians first in a rescue mission to save her father and then in destroying the weapon she designed as an Imperial cadet. Sabine gets much of the internal turmoil and glory here, enough that the final scene of her stepping aside to let another lead Mandalore feels a bit… off. Sure, we know Sabine has no real interest in the job, but given her actions in these two episodes I doubt the other Mandalorians would seem so willing to allow her to step aside in favor on another, even for someone like Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) who has the legacy to rule. While this frees the character up for more stories with the her friends, it also feels like a forced and unnatural detour in Sabine’s arc.

Despite all the warnings of possible spoilers, I didn’t see anything all that surprising in the first full trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The film, opening in theaters on December 15th, stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Billie Lourd, Domhnall Gleeson, and Gwendoline Christie.

Star Wars #37 comic reviewStar Wars #37 offers the return of Sgt. Kreel and his elite Scar Squadron. Opening with the sergeant facing the displeasure of Darth Vader, who decides to give the Imperial soldier one last chance to prove his worth (while also remarking about a non-Sith’s use of a lightsaber being highly suspect), the comic follows Kreel and his men back into action with their attack of a Rebel outpost on Horox III.

As we’ve seen in previous issues centered around Kreel and his Stormtroopers, they are the central characters here and more than just another group of Imperials for our Rebel heroes to overcome. Eventually we do see the core group of Rebels show up and inspect the handiwork of Kreel and his men. Based on Leia‘s reaction, I’d say we’re in for a run-in with the two groups before too long.

Darth Vader #5

Darth Vader #5 comic reviewAfter defeating Jedi Master Kirak Infil’a, Darth Vader has one last piece of business before claiming his trademark red lightsaber. Sent to Mustafar by the Emperor, the Dark Lord of the Sith will face one final challenge in his attempt to bend the Kyber crystal to his will and create his trademark blade.

The last bit of this arc details with the questionable decision to have a Sith change a Kyber crystal in order to force the crystals to delve into the Dark Side of the Force. As a story point having the crystal “bleed” red is awkward at best. That said, the final issue of the arc offers an interesting look into the internal conflict within the Sith who was once Anakin Skywalker. Given a vision by the crystal we see what might have been if Vader would turn against his master and reclaim his role as Jedi.
