Supergirl - Man of Steel television review

With Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) knocked-out and barely hanging on due to the Earth’s atmosphere being saturated with Kryptonite, “Man of Steel” offers a flashback episode delving into the past of Professor Ben Lockwood (Sam Witwer) who from humble beginnings grew to be the face of the anti-alien movement as Agent Liberty. The educated son of a bigoted steel factory owner (Xander Berkeley), the episode showcases the last two years of Lockwood’s life from arguing against his father’s rants to having his life destroyed by aliens and slowly accepting his father’s “wisdom.” There’s an old saying about how hatred and bigotry aren’t born but nurtured, and “Man of Steel” does a terrific job of presenting an entire episode from Lockwood’s point of view which will turn spiteful and hateful against those he believes are responsible for the ruination of his life.

Supergirl - Fallout television review

Despite it leading to her brother (Robert Baker) being caught and questioned by the DEO, as Mercy‘s (Rhona Mitra) exposure of President Marsdin (Lynda Carter) as an alien further flames anti-alien feelings and rhetoric. Mercy’s next attack turns L-Corp’s image inducers temporarily offline, revealing aliens’ true identities to the surrounding world. While physically unharmed after his inducer fails, Brainiac-5 (Jesse Rath) and Nia (Nicole Maines) both get a firsthand look at the ugly side anti-alien fervor which leads to emotional reveal from the cub reporter and a plea to her boss. It also forces James “Don’t Call Me Jimmy” Olsen‘s (Mehcad Brooks) to make a decision about how CatCo is covering recent events.

Supergirl #23

Supergirl #23 comic reviewSearching for answers about Rogol Zaar and the destruction of Krypton has led Kara to the archives of the Green Lantern Corps. Breaking in she learns the existence of a conspiracy to cover up the truth behind Krypton’s destruction by an inner circle. Armed with limited knowledge, and even more questions, Supergirl must fight her way through the Green Lantern Corps if her quest is to continue.

While the comic offers more questions than answers, and forces Kara down a path that a reasonable explanation might very well circumvent, it does layout the mystery before her and offer another breadcrumb in her search. Along the way Supergirl #23 delivers some amusing moments including Kara making Kyle Rayner look foolish (as easy as that may be to do), Krypto making a new frenemy among the members of the Corps, and Kara getting help from an unexpected source.

Supergirl - American Alien television review

There are quite a few takeaways from the Fourth Season premiere of Supergirl along with foreshadowing of where the series is headed. First, fans of Superman: The Animated Series should be happy with the introduction of Rhona Mitra as Mercy (who first appeared on the cartoon as Lex Luthor’s henchman). There was turmoil both inside the DEO and in the government, Kara (Melissa Benoist) made major strides at work taking on the mentorship of a cub reporter (Nicole Maines), and we also got a slight tease of the powerful Russian Supergirl who likely won’t make a major appearance for a few weeks. The bigger takeaway is that Supergirl isn’t shying away from political storlyines as the new alien citizens come under attack from other Americans (who are assisted in the anger and thirst for violence by Mercy and her brother) as the show will apparently take a hard look this year at a divided nation and a rise of bigotry and violence by those who view others as outsiders.

Supergirl #21

Supergirl #21 comic reviewSupergirl #21 is a transitional issue that gives Kara a new purpose and mission far from her adopted home. Recent events with Rogol Zaar have raised far too many questions for the Maid of Might, and after the discovery that even the Guardians of the Universe have something to hide about the mad man who claims to have destroyed Krytpton, Supergirl heads out to find answers.

Kara’s absence leaves yet another hole in Superman’s world as recent events have the character more isolated that he’s been in quite some time. The choice of Kara’s traveling companion is an interesting one that provides some familial bond and also gives Kara someone to talk to in the darker and lonelier moments.
