Supergirl #1Following the events set up in Supergirl: Rebirth #1, the first issue of the new Supergirl series centers around Kara Zor-El‘s struggle to fit in to her life on Earth. Kara struggles against the limitations of both her new cover identity as high school student Kara Danvers and her role with the DEO who want to monitor, and control, when and where the Kryptonian teenager uses her newly-restored powers.

Artist Brian Ching proves to be an interesting choice for the artist of the new series giving it a distinct look and feel. There’s a bit too much classic Peter Parker moping going on her for my tastes as Kara’s lack of understanding with Earth technology (far behind Kryptonian advancements) leads to struggles in the classroom. Writer Steve Orlando balances these sequences with scenes from Krypton showing us how Kara excelled in similar situations on her native world.

Supergirl: Rebirth #1

Supergirl: Rebirth #1Supergirl: Rebirth #1 relaunches Kara Zor-El in the DCU beginning with Supergirl reclaiming her powers in a dangerous experiment involving being shot directly into the sun. The issue also delivers a Kryptonian werewolf for the returning Supergirl to best. As bizarre as all that sounds, it’s actually kinda fun.

As with the other Rebirth issues, this one is mainly concerned with setting up the hero’s backstory and setting the stage for the new series. There’s plenty to like here with Supergirl returning to a more classic costume (with some unnecessary New 52 seams thrown in for some reason) and less abrasive and whiny personality.

Supergirl - The Complete First SeasonCasting Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El, the First Season of Supergirl added Superman’s cousin to the DC television stable. Not as consistent as Arrow, and not as fun as The Flash, Supergirl had her growing pains in the First Season as Kara worked to balance her life as assistant to a demanding media mogul (Calista Flockhart) and working with a secret government agency to corral super-powered prisoners who escaped from a Kryptonian prison.

Highlights of the show’s First Season include a crossover with the Flash, Supergirl exposed to Red Krptonite and the Black Mercy, J’onn Jonzz‘s (David Harewood) history revealed, political upheaval at the DEO, the first appearance of the Toyman, and Supergirl’s struggle to defend the city without her powers.

Available on both Blu-ray and DVD, extras include deleted scenes, gag reel, and featurettes on Krypton, the Martian Manhunter, and Comic-Con.

Quickly wrapping up both the threats of a Krptonite-wielding brainwashed Alex (Chyler Leigh) and the mind-controlled populace of National City by having our hero offer a little hope and appealing to the people’s better angels, Supergirl‘s First Season finale delivers a more insidious threat when Indigo (Laura Vandervoort) convinces Non (Chris Vance) that if he can’t control humanity he should wipe them out.

Justice League: Cosmic ClashThe weakest of the LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes straight-to-video movies to date, LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League: Cosmic Clash nevertheless provides its share of fun when Brainiac (Phil LaMarr) arrives on Earth with plans to shrink the planet and add it to his collection. When the ensuing battle gets Superman (Nolan North), Wonder Woman (Grey Griffin), and Green Lantern (Josh Keaton) all trapped in the past, Batman (Troy Baker) will journey back to three different time periods, with the help of the Flash (James Arnold Taylor) and his Cosmic Treadmill, and remind his friends why they need to return to the present and help save their planet.

Batman’s entire time-jumping adventures are an inside joke to the events of Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne mini-series which saw the Caped Crusader reborn in various forms such as a caveman and pirate.
