Supergirl - Immortal Kombat television review

The Fifth Season of Supergirl comes to an early end. Given the COVID-19 shortened season, not all of the season’s plot points are resolved, as the show offers a cliffanger ending leaving the fate of one supporting character in doubt and the endgame of Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) still a mystery. More than the big battles featuring Supergirl‘s (Melissa Benoist) pals fighting literal gods, or Kara’s speech to convince people to leave Obsidian North Platinum, the finale is most notable for finally offering the opportunity for Kara and Lena (Katie McGrath) to put aside recent hurt feelings and come together once more (hopefully the signaling the start of a new friendship that won’t be fractured by the first sign of trouble… or Lex’s inevitable retaliation).

DC Super Hero Girls: Infinite Frenemies #2 comic reviewMetropolis High School‘s dance may not be a typical teenage experience, but it turns out to be a pretty typical night for the DC Super Hero Girls when Livewire attacks, taking over the auditorium’s sound system, and forcing the kids to keep dancing.

There’s quite a bit of fun here leading up to Livewire’s appearance including Zatanna‘s obsession with creating the perfect evening, Supergirl‘s reluctance over attending, and Wonder Woman‘s forceful attempts to arrange dates for herself and her friends. Writer Amanda Deibert and Erich Owen even work in the reluctance of the shier students to hit the dance floor without little push.

Supergirl - Deus Lex Machina television review

While not as successful as “The House of L,” “Deus Lex Machina” does use the same structure to present a story from the perspective of Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) to catch viewers up on what the character has been up to behind-the-scenes over the past few months. Beginning with his return after “Crisis,” the episode chronicles how the villain has juggled the various threats against him and used Eve (Andrea Brooks) to both ingratiate himself to Leviathan and work for their destruction. While successfully coming out both an ally for Leviathan and hero for stopping them, Lex earns another victory. However, his ego does get in the way where a certain caped hero is concerned.

Supergirl - Alex in Wonderland television review

For the second week in a row Supergirl offers a Kara-lite (Melissa Benoist) episode as the titular character is pushed aside once again. Following last week’s Dreamer (Nicole Maines) episode, this time it’s Alex‘s (Chyler Leigh) turn. With far more groundwork laid prior to the episode’s events, “Alex in Wonderland” works more successfully than “Reality Bytes” while also being tied more directly on ongoing season plotlines. Following a season stressful events punctuated by the death of her father, Alex pushes away friends and family and looks for comfort in VR, unaware that Obsidian North still hasn’t patched various issues shown throughout the season. The season-long theme of something being too good to be true continues as Alex loses herself in a fantasy playing Supergirl.

Supergirl - Reality Bytes television review

In “Reality Bites” Supergirl shifts focus away from the Maid of Might to feature two separate storylines on supporting characters who have faded into the background a bit this season. Continuing the thread of dangerous technology, the approaching roll-out of Obsidian North Platinum offers an alarming example of how the technology could be misused as a computer programmer has found a way to hack the virtual reality world and torture his wife’s AI lover which leads Alex (Chyler Leigh) inside the shared simulation. The story offers yet another way Obsidian North may be dangerous to people, aside from Leviathan or the Luthors using it to control minds, while alerting both Alex and that the company isn’t taking issues with the technology seriously. Judging by the trailer for next week’s episode, it looks like this is a theme isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
