Sherlock Saturday takes us back to 221 B Baker Street and the Granada Television’s faithful adaptations of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Adapted from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s short story, the mystery involves the theft of a near-priceless gemstone, known as the Blue Carbuncle, which was stolen from the Countess of Morcar’s (Rosalind Knight) hotel room. The police arrest a known criminal seen at the hotel near the time of the robbery, however coming into the mystery by entirely different means (involving an abandoned goose and hat stumbled upon by Inspector Peterson during the owner’s run-in with ruffians), Holmes (Jeremy Brett) finds the missing gem literally dropped into his hands and spends the rest of the episode discovering how it ended up there.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - The Speckled Band

Sherlock Saturday takes us back to 221 B Baker Street and the Granada Television’s faithful adaptations of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. A locked-room mystery with a wicked reveal, “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” is one of my favorite Holmes short stories involving a dastardly plot by a greedy stepfather as Doctor Grimesby Roylott (Jeremy Kemp) targets the second of his two stepdaughters preventing a marriage which would force him to give up a sum for their dowry. As Holmes (Jeremy Brett) puts it here: “When a doctor goes wrong, he is the first of criminals. He has nerve. He has knowledge.”

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - The Crooked Man

Sherlock Saturday takes us back to 221 B Baker Street and the Granada Television’s faithful adaptations of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. “The Crooked Man” is an interesting episode for a couple of reasons. The entire episode, except for the epilogue, take place outside of Baker Street. Also, it becomes a case in search of murder that reveals that no murder actually occurred. Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) and Watson (David Burke) are hired to look into the death of Colonel James Barclay (Denys Hawthorne) whose body was discovered along with that of his uncurious wife Nancy (Lisa Daniely) in a locked room after an argument.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - The Solitary Cyclist

Sherlock Sunday takes us back to 221 B Baker Street and the Granada Television’s faithful adaptations of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. “The Solitary Cyclist” offers an example of  Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) being too slow to act nearly spelling disaster for his client Violet Smith (Barbara Wilshere) who hires the detective after noticing an odd man following her every week on her journey to and from the train station. The truth behind the mystery has to do with the sudden interest in the young woman from Mr. Carruthers (John Castle), whose daughter she is now tutoring, and the far less agreeable Mr. Woodley (Michael Siberry), following the death of her uncle overseas.
