The Good Place - The Trolley Problem television review

Possibly better than any other show currently on television, The Good Place knows how to write itself out of potential issues and provide twists to what is a very simple premise with (presumably) limited story options. The end of the First Season dropped the bomb shell of where Eleanor (Kristen Bell) and her friends are truly living while Season Two has kept viewers on their toes with the demons trying (and failing) to hoodwink the damned foursome again. Michael‘s (Ted Danson) decision to team-up with the group was another such twist, the fallout of which provides some of the best moments of the season so far.

The Good Place - Dance Dance Resolution / Team Cockroach TV review

The reveal that Eleanor (Kristen Bell) and her companions were actually being tortured in Hell rather than living an idyllic afterlife in Heaven left several questions about where the show would go in its Second Season. Michael‘s (Ted Danson) inability to get the results he wants after simply resetting the world and getting a do-over leads directly into “Dance Dance Resolution” where we see cherry-picked versions of more than 280 resets of The Good Place, none of which are able to stop Eleanor and her friends from discovering the truth. With the demons going on strike and fighting against this confusing new form of torture, and various changes of each iteration, Michael bows to the demands of Vicky (Tiya Sircar) while secretly trying to make a pact with Eleanor and her friends and get all of them (him included) out of this predicament without having everyone end up in a more traditional version of Hell when all of this comes crashing down.

The Good Place - Everything Is Great! TV review

After the shocking reveal to end last season, “Everything Is Great!” resets The Good Place as Michael (Ted Danson) erases the memories of the four humans and reintroduces them to a heaven that is really anything but. There’s a bit of redundancy in the two-part premiere as the show gives us the perspectives of each of the main characters over the course of the first day in The Good Place. Despite his best efforts to separate the quartet, Michael watches despondently as his reboot doesn’t have the effect he had hoped. But when you fail, try, try again.

The Good Place - Michael's Gambit TV review

This changes everything. If you haven’t been keeping up with The Good Place, stop reading and catch-up because there is a major spoiler ahead for this First Season finale that turns the entire show on its head and (literally) resets everything. What a forking twist! Returning from the Middle Place with Jason (Manny Jacinto) and Janet (D’Arcy Carden), Eleanor (Kristen Bell) faces judgement at the hands of Shawn (Marc Evan Jackson) who decrees that two people must leave the Good Place and he’ll leave it up to Eleanor, Jason, Tahani (Jameela Jamil), and Chidi (William Jackson Harper) to decide who stays and who goes.

The Good Place - ...Someone Like Me as a Member

Deciding not to immediately turn over his Eleanor (Kristen Bell) to the visitors from the Bad Place, Michael (Ted Danson) enlists the help of Tahani (Jameela Jamil) to distract and mollify his guests until a proper trade can be worked out. Meanwhile, Chidi (William Jackson Harper) begins to get to know the other Eleanor (Tiya Sircar) which only makes our “fake” Eleanor feel more out of place. These discussions also allow us a glimpse of what Eleanor’s life in the Bad Place would consist of and why neither woman would willingly want to go there.
