Adapted from Dan Brown’s 2009 novel, The Lost Symbol provided a single season with Ashley Zukerman taking over the role of Professor Robert Langdon and getting involved in a convoluted mystery involving riddles, historical mysteries, conspiracy, secret crypts, and a cult seeking God-like power they believe was hidden from the world by the Freemasons. Over 10 (mediocre to downright bad) episodes, Langdon will attempt to solve a mystery that involves his former mentor (Eddie Izzard), a tattooed man, and the woman who got away (Valorie Curry).

The search for portal and the mysterious power continues as Robert (Ashley Zukerman) uncovers a clue on the pyramid and hopes to use that knowledge to lure Mal’akh (Beau Knapp). Of course, things don’t go as planned. Much of the episode is devoted to more clue deciphering, with increasing ridiculousness making it feel like the worst possible National Treasure sequel, we also get Robert and the FBI betraying each other, and Mal’akh quite easily seeing through the ploy. The episode also teases the power of the technology Mal’akh got from the Freemasons, and how its ability to create specific frequencies might play into his plans to unlock the power he is searching for. By the end of the episode, the madman has once again outplayed the other characters and taken one step closer to his goal.

“Cascade” introduces another member of the Solomon family as Robert (Ashley Zukerman) and Katharine (Valorie Curry) visit her mother (Laura de Carteret) to break the news about Zachary only to discover she’s known he has been alive for some time. It’s also revealed that she, not the group Zachary was indoctrinated in while in prison, has been funding his efforts (although she has been largely ignorant of how bloody those efforts have become). Robert, looks like you dodged a bullet in not marrying into this crazy-ass family.

The Lost Symbol – Noögenesis

“Noögenesis” fills in the events of Zachary Solomon’s transformation into Mal’akh (Beau Knapp), without actually explaining much of anything on how he died but survived in prison and was reborn. There’s really nothing to be gained from the episode other than than to prolong the larger mystery another week. Mark Gibbon guest-stars as the cryptic mentor Zachary found in prison who taught him impossible healing techniques based on humming and heavy breathing. Yes, it’s as ridiculous as it sounds.

The Lost Symbol – Diophantine Pseudonym

  • Title: The Lost Symbol – Diophantine Pseudonym

This show is getting dumber by the episode. Along with revealing (the rather obvious and idiotic) true identity of Mal’akh (Beau Knapp), “Diophantine Pseudonym” also showcases the cult leader having the very power he’s been searching for this entire time as he wills a bullet out of his own body. It looks as ridiculous as it sounds. If he already has the power, what the hell has all this been about (other than fucking with the Solomons)? And, of course, he survives a literal cliffhanger into some of the most convenient fog ever captured on film.
