Arriving at Zadash, the Nein accept a quest from the Gentleman (Nathan Fillion) to retrieve a lost artifact in exchange for a new protection amulet to keep Caleb (Liam O’Brien) hidden from the Volstrucker. Along with offering an adventure involving retrieving the Arcane Compass from the boobytrapped hoard of the legendary pirate mercenary Nydas Okiro, the encounter in the Gentleman’s lair also foreshadows secrets of Molly‘s (Taliesin Jaffe) forgotten past and a ritual that led to both his tattoos and his missing memories.

Starting with all six of the core characters together in prison following the disaster at the carnival, the bickering group comes to a consensus to break out of prison, find the toad, rescue Toya, and prove their innocence. Things don’t go exactly as planned, but despite their mistrust of each other the group is able to work together and take down the monster only to return to the prison and find a new fight in front of them in Owelia (Bennett Abara).

The second and third episodes of The Mighty Nein continue to introduce most of the remaining core charactrs and put them on a path that will converge at the Fletching & Moondrop Traveling Carnival of Curiosities. We meet the young sailor Fjord Stone (Travis Willingham) whose ship and entire crew are killed by a sea monser. Brought back to life by something deep underwater with glowing eyes, Fjord finds himself alive, on shore, and with a set of new magical sword and powers to explore. He won’t be the last character we’re introduced to touched by some unknown powerful force.

Coming out of Critical Role, and with more than a passing resemblance to The Legend of Vox Machina (and taking place in that same world), the opening episode of The Mighty Nein begins bringing together a part of mismatched adventurers who will be called upon to save the world. The show kicks off with the theft of a religious artifact by magician assassins known as Volstrucker which raises the already tensions between the Dwendalian Empire and the Kryn Dynasty to the brink of war.
