“There’s a difference between reporting a story and advocating for a cop killer.”

The Newsroom - The Genoa Tip

As Jim (John Gallagher Jr.) continues his slog on the road with Romney campaign several news stories, and lots of Maggie (Alison Pill) craziness, hit the News Night studios. First, ACN leans that U.S. Military drones were used to target and kill American born Islamic terrorist Anwar Al-Awlaki which leads to MacKenzie (Emily Mortimer) pressuring Will (Jeff Daniels) to take a hard look at the White House’s terrorism policies. Will also has to fend off Don (Thomas Sadoski), whose nine-year obsession with the conviction of Troy Davis boils over on the eve of the Supreme Court hearing arguments to stay his execution for the murder of a police officer.

The Newsroom - First Thing We Do, Let's Kill All the Lawyers

The Second Season of The Newsroom opens with a new set of (far less pretentious) opening titles followed immediately by a legal meeting between Will (Jeff Daniels) and ACN’s legal team (led by Marcia Gay Harden) 14 months after the events of last season’s finale. Following this introduction the episode jumps back in time just weeks following the finale in which Jim (John Gallagher Jr.) requests to fill-in for a reporter on the road to get some distance from the rosy state of Maggie (Alison Pill) and Don’s (Thomas Sadoski) relationship causing MacKenzie (Emily Mortimer) to bring in Jerry Dantana (Hamish Linklater) to replace him for a couple of weeks which begins a series of dominoes falling that ends 14 months later with News Night‘s anchor talking to a room full of lawyers.

The Newsroom - Season OnePolitics and television have both been staples of Aaron Sorkin‘s previous television series. With The Newsroom the show’s creator examines both simultaneously. The HBO original series centers around moderate Republican news anchor Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) whose eruption about America’s shortcomings during a debate is used by his boss Charlie Skinner (Sam Waterston) to move the show to a more traditional news program whose main objective is to inform its viewers.

The change causes friction with the news program’s corporate owner (Jane Fonda) and a complete overhaul of the staff beginning with Skinner hiring Will’s ex-girlfriend MacKenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer) to produce. Also on board for the ride are Mac’s right-hand man Jim (John Gallagher Jr.), the often erratic Maggie (Alison Pill), and the other behind-the-scenes members of the news program (including Dev PatelAdina Porter, and Margaret Judson).
