“The Adventure of the Engineer’s Thumb” brings two leading suspects to the forefront of Cordelia Cupp’s (Uzo Aduba) investigation, setting up for the final reveal in the season finale. After seeing a number of suspects, and hearing testimony from a number of people who witnessed events in The White House that night, “The Third Man” offers some context on how the the investigation ended, where Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba) has been all this time, and identifies the mysterious “Third Man” (Timothy Hornor) who appeared at the state dinner without anyone knowing who he was and witnessed someone moving a body. Although the focus shifts from the investigation to different locals in future (the hearing, Cupp in The Amazon searching for the elusive giant antpitta, and Park (Randall Park) acting as the middle man to get to the truth while riding a kiddie train) all the parts blend wonderfully together to create one of the series best episodes and set the stage for the truth to finally be revealed.

Beginning with the Australian delegation, Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba) continues to interview staff and guests piecing together a timeline of the night while looking for motive. The Foreign Minister (Brett Tucker) explains how he happens to be wearing a dead man’s shirt while also revealing some other activities he got into with the chef (Mary Wiseman) who had plenty of confrontations with everyone that night including the victim. The awkwardness of the situation allows Cordelia to pressure the Australians into helping lock down the White House and sniffing out what really happened to the head usher (Giancarlo Esposito).

Presented through flashback during a congressional hearing from various witnesses, the first episode of The Residence introduces us to world famous bird aficionado and investigator Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba) called in after the head usher (Giancarlo Esposito) of the White House if found dead in the residence during a diplomatic dinner with Australians. While the President’s lead advisor (Ken Marino) is quick to call it a suicidal and attempt to sweep everything under the rug, our detective, whose lackadaisical style only infuriates him more, discovers discrepancies with such an easy explanation.
