Returned to her life, and with her new super-secret out in the open, Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) deals with the fallout of being a powerful woman (who is occasionally 8-feet tall and green) in a man’s world. Keeping the same lighter tone, even when dealing with a crisis for our heroine, the second and third episodes focus on a new direction for Jennifer’s role in a courtroom, attempting to work her alter-ego into her social life, and her struggles with how the world begins to fashion its own narrative about who She-Hulk is as our heroine remains reluctant to turn into the media storm. The focus of a super-woman in a man’s world can very much be felt here (especially with every male character a shmuck, a mansplaining Hulk, asshole, or creep with only a single exception who is about as asexual as you can get in the MCU).

The Hateful Eight

The Hateful EightThe Hateful Eight is neither the best nor least of writer/director Quentin Tarantino‘s oeuvre. Like most of his work, the film is highlighted by the mix of snappy dialogue and gruesome violence. And, sadly like much of his work, the film is hampered the filmmaker’s indulgences (such as shooting a film shot almost entirely in close-ups on a sound stage in 70mm simply because he felt like doing so) which don’t always serve the final product. The result is a film with terrific sequences, hampered by dark humor that doesn’t always find the right note, which eventually overstays it’s welcome.

The film begins with the chance encounter of a pair of bounty hunters (Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson) both fighting to get ahead of the oncoming blizzard. Before all is said and done the two men, along with one man’s bounty (Jennifer Jason Leigh), the carriage driver, and a host of other strangers, will all attempt to seek shelter from the storm in Minnie’s Haberdashery.

arbitrage-dvdBy outward appearances Robert Miller (Richard Gere) has it all. The hedge fund manager has a thriving family business, a loving wife (Susan Sarandon), and devoted children (Brit Marling, Austin Lysy). And one moment on a deserted street will threaten to take it all away.

While getting out of town for some alone time with his mistress (Laetitia Casta), Miller loses control and crashes her car. Although he walks away with minor scrapes and bruises, his mistress isn’t so lucky. While trying to navigate the complicated sale of his company to an elusive businessman (Graydon Carter) and hide using his company’s money for personal use from both his family and the IRS, Miller cannot afford the scrutiny an accident like this would bring.

Fleeing the scene with the help of the son (Nate Parker) of a longtime employee, Miller tries to keep one step ahead of an investigation led by a cop with a hard-on to take him down (Tim Roth), and make sure the sale goes through.
