Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - The Deadly Venom

With Baxter Stockman (Phil LaMarr) having perfected his new mind-control worms the Shredder (Kevin Michael Richardson) sends Karai (Kelly Hu) out to destroy the Turtles. First poisoning April O’Neil (Mae Whitman) and then Casey Jones (Josh Peck), Karai picks off the group one by one until only Leonardo (Seth Green) remains.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #45

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #45Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #45 immediately walks back last month’s shocking cliffhanger and the death of Donatello at the hands of Rocksteady and Bebop. The return of the Fugitoid brings new hope to the shocked family and offers a slim chance to save their fallen brother.

I understand the reasoning to bring Donnie back in some form, but wwith the announcement of the current series concluding with issue #50 the series flees from a real opportunity to delve into the change in the group dynamic following Donnie’s death. I have no doubt Robot Donnie will turn out to have an interesting arc over the final five issues but with the Foot Clan looking for revenge and the Turtles down a man there were several other (albeit it bleaker) paths for the story to go down.

The issue also gives us Casey (seemingly fully-healed from his life-threatening injuries) hitting the streets and teases a new partnership for the Shredder and Baxter Stockman which will also likely play a role in the final arc of the series. Worth a look.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #44

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #44The Turtles battle to stop the Technodrome while their plan to thin the ranks of The Foot is successful. Sadly its not a compelete success as the island itself is terraformed into a Dimension X environment and the one Turtle left behind must deal with the enraged Rocksteady and Bebop. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #44 is a game-changing issue as IDW certainly sets out to break new ground after the fallout of this issue. Caution: Major Spoilers below!

The issue wraps up most of the ongoing storylines while opening the door for this version of Karai to become a more interesting character in the coming months. Issue #44 also gives us the return of Alopex and Angel along with the defeat of General Krang. Sadly it also marks the death of a Donatello whose loss will likely be felt in every single panel of the series from this point on. It’s a bold move likely to enrage its share of fans but it also allows the series to break with tradition and take the remaining three Turtles on a different journey than we’ve ever seen before. Worth a look.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Casey Jones VS. The Underworld

Left out of all the city-saving action in Dimension X, Casey Jones (Josh Peck) works to prove himself which isn’t helped when he’s taken down by the new leader of the Purple Dragons (much to the delight of the Turtles). As Leonardo (Seth Green), Raphael (Sean Astin), Michelangelo (Greg Cipes), and Donatello‘s (Rob Paulsen) spend most of the episode cleaning their home the episode follows Casey on his various adventures including picking fights with the Purple Dragons and the Shredder (Kevin Michael Richardson).
