Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #122

Following the victory over Old Hob, the hard work of putting a legitimate government in Mutant Town begins. As for Hob, his escape thanks to the help of the weasels means he hasn’t stopped being a thorn in the Turtles’ side just yet, but it does look like he has larger plans involving the nearby islands and recruiting some new followers. I was hoping to see Hob get grudgingly woven into the fold, but it looks like he has other plans (which, given some hints here, may not be as villainous as some may think).

There’s a hopefulness here with so many of the characters planning and building for the future, despite the challenges ahead. We also get Halloween night, complete with frankly adorable costumes for everyone. With characters splitting up important roles within Mutant Town, it’s no surprise which Turtle takes on the role of protector, although Raphael‘s first attempt to collar Hob doesn’t end so well.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #121

Old Hob and the Mutanimals have been defeated… now what? Hob gets a taste of Mutant Town‘s anger towards him and the Mutanimals, as his beatdown is only stopped by a tearful plea from Zanna which nearly allows him to escape leading to a chase, some stabby-stabby action from Raphael, and Hob’s eventual recapture. Whatever happens to Hob at this point, it’s clear that not everyone will be pleased with the outcome.

Sally is safe, and her rise to the first legitimate leader of Mutant Town seems assured. Many questions remain, however. What do they do with Hob and Sally’s old friend Ray? And will the weasels take the decision out of the others’ hands by releasing Hob and possibly even leave with him? Also, just who was Hob talking to on the phone and what other tricks might he have up his sleeve?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #120

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #120 comic reviewPicking up from the events of the last issue, the Turtles and their friends must deal with the riot between Sally‘s supporters and the Mutanimals. Turns out the Turtles have trained their students well, as they are quickly able to send the Mutanimals packing only to discover the abduction of the weasels and Lita leading to the group storming Old Hob‘s compound.

While none of the other characters are there to witness it, Hob does have a change of heart after discovering Ray caused the attack on the rally and kidnapped the kids without his approval. Oroku Saki helps rescue the kids before disappearing once more leaving a confused Hob to deal with a mob of angry mutants who blame him for all of the day’s events.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #119 comic reviewThe trouble-free days for the heroes in a half-shell appear to be over. April has been run out of New York City by Baxter Stockman who is taking measures to see she never makes it back to Manhattan to share the information she learned about his secret mutant program using the Slithery’s offspring.

Elsewhere, the young weasels and Lita head out on their own looking for trouble to prove themselves true ninjas, and end up finding more than they can handle, and the big rally has arrived which Old Hob and his Mutanimals take dangerous steps to remove any and all competition from running Mutant Town. The issue closes will all hell about to break loose between Hob’s minions and the locals who the Turtles have been training.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #117

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #117 comic reviewI do so love this comic. The battle of the bands is finally here as Jennika and her group put on a show so good that Bebop and Rocksteady admit defeat without ever taking the stage. We also get peace between the Turtles and Karai and the end to future Lita‘s time travel adventure as events are back on the proper path allowing her to return home (and take a couple of guests with her as well). And that future, it looks mighty bright.

The issue is filled with several great moments from the victory of the band, to Koya‘s almost too cute for words request to return for future engagements, to Lita’s sweet farewells (I’m not crying, you’re crying!), to the start of a new romance, and to the tease of the return of a core character back to the main storyline (although in an entirely new context). The creative team event gives me a cool hero moment for my favorite Turtle.
