“Who is Charles DiLaurentis?”

Pretty Little Liars - Game On, Charles

Picking up directly following the events of last season’s finale, the Liars‘ first escape attempt fails leaving them at the mercy of A for another three weeks (with each Liar separately facing unseen punishment from their captor) before the group is brought back together for another attempt. Weeks without their loved ones has made Ezra (Ian Harding), Toby (Keegan Allen), Caleb (Tyler Blackburn), and Alison (Sasha Pieterse) desperate enough to attempt to use Alison as bait to find their missing friends. Although the episode ends with a victory over A and an end to their Liars‘ imprisonment, each is left with the scars of their time held hostage and unanswered questions about Charles DiLaurentis (who they believe is the true identity of their adversary).

Pretty Little Liars - Welcome to the Dollhouse

As expected, the Pretty Little Liars season finale “Big A Reveal” wasn’t what fans were expecting, but that doesn’t mean serious ground wasn’t made in the final episode of the show’s Fifth Season. There were three reveals to discuss. The first, that someone connected to the DiLarentis family named Charles is likely A raises more questions than it answers (and could quite easily be nothing more than the show’s latest red herring). The second involves the surprise return of another character from the dead. It’s the third, however, which is the important reveal as Peter (Nolan North) and Veronica Hastings (Lesley Fera) and Linda Tanner (Roma Maffia) all learn of the existence of A and get a good look at the horror the Liars‘ nemesis has put the girls through. Although the season ends on a cliffhanger with the fate of Mona (Janel Parrish) and all the Liars in doubt, the army against A has grown considerably over the course of a single episode.

Paving the way for next week’s season finale (and promised big reveal), Alison‘s (Sasha Pieterse) comes to a close and the remaining Liars are set to join her in prison (although what they are actually being charged with is unclear). Alison’s guilty verdict isn’t a surprise but her insistence to avoid the truth like the plague (such as explaining the archery trophy which, as bizarre as it seems, was the final nail in her coffin with the jury) when it could have possibly changed the outcome is confounding. Nor does Alison get any help from Mike (Cody Allen Christian) as Aria (Lucy Hale) takes steps to protect her bother leading to Mike, Ezra (Ian Harding), and Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) into an ambush by A.

Pretty Little Liars - The Melody Lingers On

As Alison‘s (Sasha Pieterse) trial begins Aria (Lucy Hale) and Emily (Shay Mitchell) continue to search for the mysterious Varjak whose only contact with the Liars is to play “Paris Skies A” over the phone, a song A teases the girls with as well after their nemesis beats them to searching Mona‘s (Janel Parrish) bedroom. Despite A’s gloating, the Liars do find a clue but do they have enough time to decipher it before Alison, and likely Hanna (Ashley Benson), is sentenced to prison?

Pretty Little Liars - To Plea or Not to Plea

With Alison (Sasha Pieterse) in prison contemplating a plea deal A finally uses the stolen Liars blood to frame Hanna (Ashley Benson) as Ali’s accomplice in Mona‘s (Janel Parrish) murder. The episode concludes with Hanna’s arrest and A deleting years of texts to each of the Liars which was the only proof the girls had to back-up an alternate theory of who killed Mona. As we’ve seen before, the show again stretches credibility in A’s near omnipotent ability to stymie the Liars, but the twist does leave the girls without even the flimsiest of evidence to reveal A’s existence.
