Warrior Nun - Ecclesiasticus 26:9-10 television review

Leaving the nuns doesn’t go quite how Ava (Alba Baptista) expected when she flees the order and looks to explore a normal life. Although JC (Emilio Sakraya) is happy by her return the others are a bit skittish after the surprise visit by the wealthy scientist hunting for her (although it appears none immediately cash-in on seeing her again). Their apprehension isn’t helped by an example of Ava’s powers. Choosing to leave the city with JC seems to be the prudent thing, however nagging memories continue to resurface over the course of the episode as Ava looks back on the time at the orphanage and makes a trouble discovery about Sister Frances (Frances Tomelty) prompting a return and a deadly confrontation.

Warrior Nun - Ephesians 6:11 television review

Warrior Nun‘s third episode offers the explanation to the world in which Ava (Alba Baptista) has found herself as she discovers the history of the Order of the Cruciform Sword and where the artifact attached to her spine, which brought her back from death, came from. While training with the nuns, most of whom aren’t all that pleased with her arrival (and several of whom question her worthiness), Ava learns about the first warrior nun Areala of Cordoba and the destiny of those who have come after her. While the episode may be a bit of a data dump, for the benefit of both Ava and the audience, our hero’s training (highlighted in the show’s trailers) provides some of the most fun of the series so far. With Ava spending all of her time with the nuns, we don’t get much of JC (Emilio Sakraya) and his friends, although the group does get an unexpected surprise by someone looking for their new friend.

Warrior Nun - Proverbs 31:25 television review

“Proverbs 31:25” feels very much like the second-half of a two-hour network pilot introducing more important supporting characters and slowly bringing the various plot threads together in the final moments. Ava (Alba Baptista) spends more time with JC (Emilio Sakraya) and the squatters, going with them to a party at Arq-Tech where the company is unveiling new technology based on the same sacred artifacts the Church has been keeping under wraps for generations. The two opposing characters of interest here are the scientist (Thekla Reuten) using Divinium in the experiments and Cardinal Duretti (Joaquim de Almeida) who opposes any such research (and is also tied to the secret arm of the Church that runs the assassin nuns). Meanwhile, the nuns led by Lilith (Lorena Andrea) have been tracking the demon tracking Ava as all paths converge at the party and setting up Ava’s introduction to a hidden world in the next episode of the series.

Warrior Nun - Psalm 46:5 television review

Adapted from the comic book Warrior Nun Areala, the opening episode of Warrior Nun introduces us to a world where a legion of heavily armed nuns fight battles against an unknown foe. The field leader of the group (Melina Matthews) is injured in an attack and unable to be saved by the medical nuns (guess they have every type of nun in this series) with the yet-to-be-named enemy at the door. The opening episode of Warrior Nun could use a bit more world building as we’re left largely as clueless as to how the nuns operate (are they known? work in the shadows? vigilantes? some kind of official law enforcement?) although Father Vincent‘s (Tristán Ulloa) musings to a bartender near the end of the episode seem to point to most people being unaware of their existence and at least explain what the group is fighting against: demons on Earth.
