We Are Lady Parts - Represent / Sparta

The final two episodes of the first, and perhaps only, season of the witty and heartfelt We Are Lady Parts revolve around the release and backlash of social media influencer Zarina’s (Sofia Barclay) article about the band that no only outs Amina (Anjana Vasan) to her friends but also paints the group as anti-Muslim radicals leading to a crushing wave of social media hate landing on the band. The fact that article hits on an already emotional day for Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey) leads to the implosion of the band, Amina returning to her pre-Lady Parts life, and leaving Momtaz (Lucie Shorthouse) to pick up the pieces and try to put the band back together.

We Are Lady Parts - Godzilla television review

A crushing failure for the band is followed up by a huge success in “Godzilla” as Amina (Anjana Vasan) decides to rededicate herself to the band and Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey) promises to help her new friend through her fear. Although Amina continues to keep the band secret from her friends, her parents do become aware of her new hobby as the show support both in her daughter overcoming her fears and in her new friendships. The episode gives us Amina struggling through reciting a poem at a poetry slam. Although at times incomprehensible, the small victory pays off huge when she’s able to help perform at the band’s next gig in front of an unimpressed Irish pub. Although Lady Parts doesn’t win over the crowd, Amina (inspired by Saira) does find the strength to perform. The episode also introduces Sofia Barclay as a social influencer who offers to help the band, although the episode foreshadows other motivations behind the woman’s actions.

We Are Lady Parts - Earth Natives television review

Amina (Anjana Vasan) struggles to keep her two lives separate as the day of Noor’s (Aiysha Hart) engagement party and the band’s audition arrives. Thanks to some unexpected help from Ahsan (Zaqi Ismail), Amina is able to get through the party without explaining to her friends that the two aren’t dating. The audition, however, is another story. Leading up to the scene, “Earth Natives” showcases Amina’s growing tension keeping two halves of her life separate but also how much more comfortable she’s become with playing with the band in private. But when the venue becomes public her new found courage quickly evaporates. At least she didn’t puke. After the disaster of the audition, where does that leave Amina now?

We Are Lady Parts - Potential Future Spouse TV review

In the show’s second episode, Amina (Anjana Vasan) agrees to help the band try out in exchange for what turns out to be one awkward date with Ahsan (Zaqi Ismail). Momentarily believing she has landed a potential future spouse, Amina is over the moon (until the point he locks her firmly in the friend zone ruining her romantic fantasy). However, out of that pain comes our protagonist’s first rehearsal with the band where she finds a new side of herself in helping to compose their next song. “Potential Future Spouse” continues its warm embrace of the characters’ awkward human moments as the band members struggle with their relationships, even Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey) gets thrown by her boyfriend’s request to become “official.” While Amina hides the failed romance from her other friends, her experience helps her make connections with the band members and take a first step to becoming the person she was always meant to be.

We Are Lady Parts - Play Something television review

The first episode of Peacock streaming’s new series We Are Lady Parts is an unexpected joy. “Play Something” introduces us to Amina (Anjana Vasan), a young woman seeing the last of her single friends become engaged. A talented guitarist, but burdened with stage fright that ends in projectile vomiting, Amina teaches guitar to children while hoping to find a good husband. Elsewhere, the all-female Muslim punk band known as We Are Lady Parts (Sarah Kameela, Juliette Motamed, and Faith Omole along with their manager played by Lucie Shorthouse) begins a search to add a lead guitar player to the group. The two stories converge when Amina chases a cute boy straight into the group’s auditions. Although I can see Amina’s condition becoming something of a running gag that may get tiring over the series’ run, the first episode is more clever than I was expecting the sitcom set-up to be.
