Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #5When Paradise Island comes under attack from mythological monsters which disappear as quickly as they appear Wonder Woman calls on the services of Mystery, Inc. who Batman personally recommends given the fact that he can’t step foot on Themyscira. With Shaggy and Fred cooped up on the Invisible Plane, and Scooby free to wander the island (the laws don’t apply to dogs it seems), Velma and Daphne undergo a crash course in Amazon fighting while waiting for the first sign of danger.

Despite the fact the Scooby Gang finds themselves on an island where magic is real, the latest issue of Scooby-Doo Team-Up keeps the the classic formula of having a reasonable explanation behind all the odd occurrences – even the giant Hydra, Cyclops, and Minotaur which they see attack the Amazons with their own eyes. Rather than have the “no men allowed” be a sexist ban, writer Sholly Fisch writes in an explanation in the form of a curse stripping the Amazons of their power should men step foot on the island which also explains the reason for the Duke of Deception‘s illusions. As always, worth a look.

Justice League: War

Justice League: WarBased on DC Comics’ New 52 reboot and the first arc of the current Justice League series by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee, Justice League: War isn’t as awful as I suspected. It’s not actually a good movie, but most of the issues here have to do with the source material itself rather than any mistakes in the adaptation into the film.

Replacing the missing Aquaman with Captain Marvel (Sean Astin), who I still refuse to call him Shazam, the storyline is basically intact as the various heroes of the Justice League come together to defeat Darkseid (Steve Blum) and the invading armies of Apokolips. As with Lee’s original designs, everything looks and feels too muted including the super-hero costumes, particularly those of Superman (Alan Tudyk) and Wonder Woman (Michelle Monaghan), that lack any pop. And although (thankfully) the film chooses to stay away from that awful yellow piping on the Flash‘s (Christopher Gorham) costume we saw at the end of The Flashpoint Paradox, Green Lantern (Justin Kirk) is still stuck with the unnecessary light-up pieces of his costume.

JLA Adventures: Trapped in TimeAimed more to a kid-friendly all-ages audience than the much more publicized Justice League: War release, and available only at Target (as a tie-in to the store’s JLA toy line), JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time proves to be a hell of a lot of fun. Rather than adapting an existing mini-series or comic arc (which seems all that DC has been interested in lately), Trapped in Time offers an original adventure from screenwriter Michael Ryan and director Giancarlo Volpe that’s a bit of a throwback to the old Super Friends days.

The straight-to-DVD adventure begins with the Legion of Doom‘s latest plan of world conquest by expanding the polar ice caps which leaves Lex Luthor (Fred Tatasciore) stuck in ice for hundreds of years before his frozen remains are eventually discovered. Accidentally released by two junior members of the Legion of Super-Heroes, Lex uses the knowledge and technology of the future to return to the past with a plan to stop the Justice League from ever forming by attacking Superman while he was still an infant.

Superman/Wonder Woman #2

Superman/Wonder Woman #2The second issue of Superman/Wonder Woman is equal parts entertaining and frustrating. The tease in last month’s issue about a big throwdown between Superman and Wonder Woman vs. Doomsday is over in just a handful of panels before it ever really begins. And the way it ends is also odd as Doomsday simply stops beating Diana half-to-death to disappear as Superman saves the freighter from the storm. Consider of the unstoppable killing machine, I guess?

From there the two heroes spend time in both the Fortress of Solitude to discuss Doomsday who Kal-El fears may have found a way to temporarily escape the Phantom Zone and to the halls of Hephaestus who Diana beseeches to build a suit of armor for her love. The issue also teases the *sigh* arrival of another Kryptonian on Earth.

Although I’m against Superman needing magic god armor to take on anyone, the series of events does get the Man of Steel bitch slapped by Apollo whose second move is nowhere near as intelligent and leaves the god at the mercy of Superman. Hit-and-Miss.
