Zatanna

Young Justice #5

Young Justice #5 comic reviewThere’s much to like about the latest issue of Young Justice as our heroes, now finally reunited, break out of the prison in Gemworld and begin their fight against Lord Opal. Along with the clever banter and strong action of the moment, the comic also offers another flashback to Robin‘s day leading up to being transported to another dimension. And this gives us Tim Drake and Stephanie Brown together making out in front of the Hall of Justice. This is so damn good. If Brian Michael Bendis can find a way to put Stephanie Brown in her Batgirl suit in this reality I just might lose my shit.

The flashbacks also include an appearance by Zatanna whose magic helps Robin tap into suppressed memories about the previous Young Justice team (and the best friend he has forgotten). While his journey with the other heroes was unexpected, Robin was already on the case seeking answers about the forgotten memories and lost friends.

Justice League Unlimited - This Little Piggy television review

Our Throwback Tuesday post takes us back to the animated adventures of Justice League. “This Little Piggy” is a hell of a goofy episode that features Wonder Woman (Susan Eisenberg) being turned into a pig by the sorceress Circe (Rachel York). Needing all the help he can get, Batman (Kevin Conroy) turns to his old friend Zatanna (Jennifer Hale) to try and break the spell. When that fails, he calls on a few C-list Justice Leaguers to hunt down both the Wonder Pig (who goes missing) and Circe. All of the bizarre antics later, including Wonder Pig wandering into a slaughter house, conclude with Batman paying Circe’s price for Diana’s freedom in a way that brings both Circe and Zatanna to tears.

Mystik U #2

Mystik U #2 comic reviewWhat if Zatanna went to Hogwarts? That’s the basic premise behind the mini-series where Zatanna’s past is altered allowing a younger version of the character to attend a magical university known as Mystik U. The first issue set up the basic concept of Zatanna needing to change her past in order to be prepared for a dark evil in the future. To that end we’ve seen Zatanna meet a group of new friends and attempt to fit into the magical collegiate community.

While still foreshadowing that one student will eventually go evil, Mystik U #2 features two major stories. In the first we see Zatanna earn the attention of a magical sorority. While her friends warn her about the group, Zatanna learns the hard way about dangers lurking on campus.

Detective Comics #962

Detective Comics #962 comic reviewAlthough Batman: Knightfall and its events apparently don’t exist in the new Rebirth DCU, Detective Comics #962 offers some fan service to the storyline that saw Azrael temporarily step-in as Batman. With the former soldier of St. Dumas out of control, the Bat Family put Azrael in a new suit of armor giving him added support against the voices of Ascalon and the programming which is trying to reassert itself on him. That suit jumps happens to have a familiar design.

While it’s probably a good idea to retcon Knihtfall from the DCU, this issue is a nice throwback for fans of those stories. With the suit, complete with an AI based on Batman’s moral code rather than that of a cult of zealots, Azrael is able to fight back the programming and help the Bat Family take down Ascalon.

Detective Comics #960

Detective Comics #960 comic reviewDetective Comics #960 continues the arc’s dual storylines. Batman reconnects with Zatanna and attempts to convince her to let him use a powerful and dangerous artifact known as the Gnosis Sphere which can answer any question posed to it. Once again we’re give flashbacks to Bruce and Zatanna’s past and the first time Zatanna offered to show her young friend the device. Now she does all she can to dissuade him from using it.

Given the recent events involving the apparent loss of Tim Drake and Batman discovering that his memories have been altered where the League of Shadows (and possibly other things) are concerned, along with his quest to find the answers about the mysterious god-like force altering the DCU, it makes sense that Batman would seek out confirmation about his decision-making and to find out answers to his questions. However, as Zatanna says, that’s a dangerous path to go down.
