Zatanna

Detective Comics #959

Detective Comics #959 comic reviewOn one hand Detective Comics #959 is a middle issue of an Azrael arc. I’ll be honest, that’s not going to grab my attention or keep it, by itself, for that long. It appears the Order of St. Dumas, who programmed Azrael and sent him out in the world as their agent of change and vengeance, got tired of him choosing his own path and put together something even more fearsome in their new acolyte Ascalon. While the latest issue doesn’t offer much more information about the new threat, it does foreshadow a possible issue with Azrael looming in the very near future.

Harley’s Little Black Book #3

Harley's Little Black Book #3

The latest issue of Harley Quinn‘s bi-monthly team-up book pairs Zatanna, who gets booked in Big Tony’s cabaret show the same day a trio of ghosts leave Coney Island and take up residence in Harley’s building, with Harley. The plot is a little convoluted with Harley’s house guests, Zatanna, the ghosts, the demon chasing the ghosts, the buggy monster, and the more powerful creature controlling the demon. That said, what works well is the interactions between the two women.

Bizarro #4

Bizarro #4The six-issue mini-series centering on the bizarre friendship between Bizarro and Jimmy Olsen continues when the unlikely pair run into Zatanna in Bizarro #4. The madcap adventures from writer Heath Corson and artist Gustavo Duarte (with a little help from Darwyn Cooke) get a little magical boost to the proceedings with this issue. What happens when you mix backward magic and Bizarro? Total chaos, that’s what!

Bizarro #4 features three DC characters I enjoy but often dislike how they are used within the DCU. This issue allows Jimmy to be a troublemaker, Bizarro to show some humanity, and Zatanna to shine without getting lost in a grim Vertigo-esque plot.
