AEW Collision – 10/7/2023

AEW Collision - 10/7/2023

Starting one hour early, the October 7th edition saw new tag team champions crowned and matches of Bryan Danielson versus Kyle Fletcher, the Iron Savages versus the Acclaimed, Toni Storm versus Kiera Hogan, Bullet Club Gold in a trios match, and Eddie Kingston versus Komander.

Highlights:

  • After the intro interviews, the show started with FTR defending their AEW World Tag Team Championship against Ricky Starks and Big Bill with the heels taking out Cash Wheeler early (likely because of the rib injury suffered last week, although he did get put through the announcer’s table so it wasn’t really a night off for him) and leaving Dax to fight off both challengers for the entirety of the match. In a bit of a surprise, AEW crowns Starks and Bill as new tag champions (rather than Aussie Open, some combination of Bullet Club, etc.). The choice should keep Starks star burning bright, and give FTR some time to lick their wounds, but you do wonder what the tag division booking will look like for the next few weeks leading into AEW Full Gear. We got a backstage segment later in the night with Starks and Bill being interviewed by Tony Schiavone.
  • After barely giving wrestlers time to clear out of the ring, Bryan Danielson‘s music hit for his match against Kyle Fletcher in a slower, more technical match that picked up in the second-half with Fletcher getting a couple of near falls before Bryan got the pin. Good match that gave Fletcher some momentum even in defeat. Following the win, Kaun and Toa Liona hit the ring to attack Danielson (prior to his match against Swerve Strickland next week on Dynamite) bringing out Claudio and Yuta to make the save and set up a match for them on Rampage.
  • The main event of Collision was given to the Eddie Kingston defending his Ring of Honor World Championship against Komander. Lots of lucha wrestlers on Collision this week giving challenges to other wrestlers dealing with their styles and providing several fun spots over the course of the night. The match played on the different styles of the two wrestlers before Kingston got the pin.
  • With Jay White (and Cardblade) at ringside, Juice Robinson and the Gunns took on Angelico, Metalik, and Gravity in a trios match. Bullet Club Gold continues to prove they can put on a good match with any combination of opponents. The Luchadores gave it their best before Metalik took the pin. The match was followed by an in-ring promo from White (still holding the stolen AEW Championship) continuing build heat towards his AEW Championship match at Full Gear
  • We got a shortened recap highlight version of the Timeless Toni Storm segments prior to Storm coming out for her match against Kiera Hogan. Toni gave the announcers and Hogan a script to play out, which Hogan prompted tore up. Fun opening and fun match with Hogan getting in a solid amount of offense before Storm getting the win.
  • Adam Copeland‘s in-ring segment with Christian Cage was recapped. Later, closing out the night following Kingston’s win, Copeland hit the ring to make his first Collision appearance asking for Christian to explain his actions on Dynamite. Instead of an answer, Christian sent on Luchasaurus and Nick Wayne. for a beatdown with Darby Allin hitting the ring for an attempted save that didn’t turn out well for Darby or Adam.

Less Notable:

  • Back-and-forth promos between Keith Lee and Shane Taylor.
  • The Acclaimed successfully defended the AEW World Trios Championship against the Iron Savages. Typical Acclaimed match hitting their usual fun spots.
  • Pre-taped segment with Nick Wayne explained his aligning with Christian Cage (which oddly didn’t reference Darby forgiving AR Fox for attempting to murder Wayne in his own home).
  • Backstage interview with Renee Paquette informing Ruby Soho that she’s been banned from ringside for Saraya‘s title match against Hikaru Shida on Dynamite.
