AEW Dynamite - 3/6/2024

With a new intro theme and new stage, the first post-Revolution episode of Dynamite gave us Swerve Strickland and Samoa Joe teaming up against The Kingdom, Kyle Fletcher vs. Will Ospreay, Killswitch vs. Matt Menard, and Kris Statlander vs Riho. Oh, and Okada is now All Elite.

Highlights:

  • The first Dynamite post Revolution started with an in-ring promo from Swerve Strickland discussing his near miss at grabbing the title at the PPV and stating he would become world champion. This led to Samoa Joe hitting the ring to offer the champion’s rebuttal followed by the arrival of the Undisputed Kingdom and Story Time with Adam Cole leading into the show’s opening match between Swerve and Joe vs. The Kingdom’s Matt Taven and Mike Bennett. The pair were able to co-exist long enough and get the win, although they didn’t exactly work well together leading to Joe putting Swerve to sleep after the win while looking down the ramp at Wardlow (who he will have to defend against next week).
  • A short recap package explained the history between Hook and Brian Cage, and we also got Renee Paquette‘s interview with Hook (interrupted by Chris Jericho), prior to the pair’s hardcore match for the FTW Championship. Match featured lots of hardcore spots including tacks, suplexes into a guardrail, chairs, and kendo sticks before Hook choked out Cage with the Redrum. After the match Hook was attacked by the Mogul Embassy who were run out by Jericho.
  • Prepackaged video package for the history of the Tag Team Championship which also worked as as an announcement for a tag team tournament to crown new Tag Team Champions following Sting‘s retirement. This was followed up later in the night with a prepackaged video package recapping Sting’s last match.
  • In a busy night backstage, Renee gave us another interview this time with the returning Kyle O’Reilly who confirmed his friendship with the Undisputed Kingdom but his need to prove himself after two years out of the ring.
  • Nicholas and Matthew Jackson pre-announced a pair of huge announcements for later in the show (lampooning Tony Khan‘s much-criticized announcement style). Coming out later in the night, the pair announced their inclusion in the tag tournament, the suspension of Hangman Adam Page for his attacks on the referees at Revolution, and the pair “firing” Kenny Omega from The Elite for his absence in recent weeks. Eddie Kingston hit the ring to pick a fight which the Young Bucks were all to quick to accept. In a swerve we got the arrival of Kazuchika Okada looking initially to save Eddie but confirming his membership with the Buck as the newest member of The Elite.
  • Another backstage segment with Renee interviewing Timeless Toni Storm presenting Mariah May (still in her retro Toni Storm gear) with her first t-shirt and announcing the “Toni Awards” are coming soon.
  • Kris Statlander, with Stockley Hathaway in her corner, got upset by the returning Riho in a power vs. speed dynamic with Statlander still playing the face, and refusing the chain Stokley offered, but was notably a bit more brutal than normal in parts of the match. The women got time and earned the first legitimate “this is awesome” chants from the crowd. This was followed up later in the night with Renee interviewing Stokley and Willow Nightingale with the announcement Willow will take on Riho next week.
  • Backstage promo segment with Julia Hart, with Skye Blue, offering and “Open House” challenge to anyone on Rampage. After a commercial break, we got a separate House of Black promo (with Julia) discussing their feud with Mark Briscoe. We got an immediate rebuttal with Briscoe accepting a match on Collision and Jay Lethal‘s support.
  • Tony Schiavone called out Darby Allin to discuss life after Sting, his upcoming plans to climb Mount Everest, and his match next week with Switchblade Jay White (who came out with the Gunns to interrupt Darby, run down both Sting and Darby, and offer an alternative to the pair’s match next week which Darby politely declined).
  • The main event featured Will Ospreay against his old friend Kyle Fletcher, with Don Callis joining in on commentary. The match opened with a hug between the pair in the middle of the ring and then the pair stole the whole damn show with a terrific PPV-level main event ending with Ospreay getting his hand raised and Bryan Danielson striding out to have a word with Mr. Ospreay.
