AEW Dynamite – 4/5/2023

A packed AEW Dynamite featured four championship matches, more heel BCC, a major announcement, the arrival of Jay White cementing Bullet Club as a faction to be recognized moving forward and a coming home celebration for MJF. Forget Rusev Day, it’s MJF Day.

Highlights:

  • Before Ricky Starks‘ match with Juice Robinson could get started, Jay White appeared to help Robinson with a two-on-one beatdown of Starks. White is now All Elite, suggesting a new AEW Bullet Club could play a big role in AEW’s plans moving forward.
  • Starting with a pre-taped segment with the MJF in Long Island, MJF Day ended the first hour of the show with a live band, MJF singing “Pennies from Heaven” (to the delight of the crowd), an in-ring segment announcing MJF Day is now an official holiday in Oyster Bay, and a promo from the champ, before ending with Max being jumped by a member of the band on the ramp revealed to be Jungle Boy.
  • Sammy Guevara, with major heel heat from the crowd after coming out at the end of the MJF segment holding the championship belt, beat Komander in a high-flying match which continued to further the Four Pillars storyline and also showcase the athleticism of both men. In-ring post-match interview featured Sammy (with the other Pillars shown watching on) making his claim to the title.
  • Getting a much earlier spot than usual on the card, Jamie Hayter defended the AEW Women’s Championship against Riho in a great clash of styles in Hayter’s power and Riho’s quickness. The crowd were hot for the match, cheering on both faces in a rare face vs. face match that didn’t force either wrestler to play heel and really played up Riho’s resilience before Hayter claiming the win.
  • The House of Black defended the AEW Trios Championship against Orange Cassidy and Best Friends (who arrived at the arena in a minivan driven by Sue). Fun match with the expected goofy spots from the Best Friends and the brutality from the House of Black. La Facción Ingobernable was in the crowd which didn’t play into the match but may be foreshading a new feud. Anna Jay was also shown in the back watching the match, as a callback to her words to Julia Hart last week on AEW Rampage.
  • Chris Jericho cut a backstage promo with Tony Schiavone about Adam Cole which was interrupted by Keith Lee setting up a match between the pair next week.
  • Nigel McGuinness, Tony Khan, and Adam Cole announced AEW will bring back All In this August for the company’s first London show (and first stadium show) which will take place on August 27th in Wembley Stadium.
  • The main event featured FTR putting up their careers at AEW for a title shot against the Ass Boys. Playing on the unknown contract status of FTR, the match featured several near falls by the Ass Boys along with the heel team’s attempts to get disqualified (loosing the match but keeping the titles). In the end, to the delight of the crowd, FTR win back the one set of titles which have alluded them since 2020.
  • Hook defended the FTW Championship against “All Ego” Ethan Page with an assist from Matt Hardy seemingly ending his relationship with Page and the Firm.
  • Short wordless promo promising the return of both Christian Cage and Luchasaurus (who was well lit backstage to really sell a dark run in the wrestler’s return). The pair would be a nice addition to a injury-plagued tag division.
  • The Acclaimed declined to join the JAS on their way to the ring in Max Caster‘s rap. Despite declining the offer, it appears JAS isn’t done attempting to woo the team to Jericho’s stable as Angelo Parker and Matt Menard will be teaming with them on Rampage.
  • Short trios squash match with the Blackpool Combat Club making quick work of their opponents continuing to build the stable as an unstoppable heel group. Match was followed up with a Bryan Danielson promo putting down the rest of the roster as “amateurs” leading to “Hangman” Adam Page hitting the ring only to be quickly triple-teamed while Danielson continued his promo before attack Page with a screwdriver.

Lows:

  • Not a fucking thing.

Less Notable:

  • Renee Paquette interviewed The Outcasts backstage claiming one of them will become the next AEW Women’s Champion.
