AEW Dynamite – 5/10/23

The May 10th edition of AEW Dynamite featured Claudio Castagnoli versus Rey Fenix, the return of Miro and Thunder Rosa, title defenses for the House of Black and Orange Cassidy, Anna Jay versus Julia Hart, and Kenny Omega versus Jon Moxley in a steel cage.

Highlights

  • The opening match was Claudio Castagnoli versus Rey Fenix in a double jeopardy match with the winner getting a shot at the other’s title on a future date. Classic power versus speed match up with lots of crazy spots for Fenix before Claudio claiming the win with the Ricola Bomb.
  • Appearance by Miro walking in to Tony Khan‘s office. Follow-up return for Thunder Rosa as well, also heading into Khan’s office leading to Khan teasing a big announcement next week (possibly the confirmation of AEW Collision).
  • Orange Cassidy defended the International Championship against Daniel Garcia in a match playing on Garcia targeting previously injured body parts on Cassidy’s long winning streak and Cassidy’s offense being limited before pulling out a tough-fought victory.
  • Pre-taped interview with MJF talking about the Four Pillars and the fatal four way match at Double or Nothing. Later in the night we got a Sammy Guevara segment featuring highlights and interviews from Sammy, Tay Melo, and Chris Jericho. Later in the night we got a similar promos for both Darby Allin and Jungle Boy.
  • Pre-taped promo highlighting the Elite‘s run-ins with the Blackpool Combat Club setting up Jon Moxley‘s match with Kenny Omega later in the night. Match was slow to start with the factions getting involved before both men could get in the cage together in scrums up the ramp and at ringside. Eventually the others were cleared out, with Bryan Danielson staying on commentary, and we got Omega versus Moxley in the cage and Omega putting a barbed-wire steel chair to good use and Moxley dismantling the ring to use as weapons against Omega. Brutal match between the pair with Omega hitting the V-Trigger and breaking both men through the side of the cage. Once back in, Omega seemed ready to win with the One Winged Angel before Don Callis‘ turn gave the win to Moxley and the BCC.
  • Recap of last week’s events between Adam Cole and Chris Jericho leading into Renee Paquette‘s backstage interview with Jericho setting up both Cole and the rest of JAS banned from the building next week and a Roderick Strong versus Jericho match.
  • Anna Jay jumped Julia Hart early on her way to the ring with a steel chair starting their no-holds-barred match. Announcers continued to play up the former friends angle through the chairs, kendo sticks, and garbage cans. Jay dominated much of the match as she produces another strong performance in a hardcore match before Hart gets the pin adding some more momentum to the House of Black.
  • House of Black defended the Trios Championship against Best Friends and Bandido in the first “open house” match featuring the champions’ new rules. Fun match, with some dimmed lighting for the House who, not surprisingly, got the win. Cassidy was shown watching in the back and we got a return to the back after the match showing him on the floor with Kyle Fletcher standing over him.
  • Team TNA interrupted FTR‘s in-ring promo to demand the champions accept their challenge for Double or Nothing. Mark Briscoe hit the ring announcing the match was on for the PPV and he would be the special referee leading to a scrum and a blinded Dax Harwood piledriving Briscoe rather than one of the members of Team TNA who jumped them.
  • Christian Cage, with Luchasaurus arrived for an in-ring interview segment with Tony Schiavone talking trash to the crowd, talking trash on both Arn Anderson and Wardlow, and laying out his claim to the TNT Championship.
