AEW Rampage – 1/13/2023

The latest edition of AEW Rampage was notable for the street fight between Ruby & Willow versus Tay Jay, a title defense for Darby Allin, and some wacky in-ring segments.

Highlights:

  • Ruby Soho and Willow Nightingale defeated Anna Jay and Tay Melo in the show’s best match. A brutal street fight saw action in and out of the ring including Jay taking a rough looking table spot off the stage from Willow (where Jay missed the table completely and landed on the floor of the arena) and heavy bleeding from Ruby. Great match from all four women that sold the brutality of the match.
  • Darby Allin defeated Juice Robinson in a solid TV match to retain the TNT Championship. Basic spots of the smaller Darby getting tossed around by the bigger man before ultimately hitting a Scorpion Death Drop from the top rope followed by a Coffin Drop for the win.
  • Goofy segment between The Acclaimed and the Gunn Club who interrupted their attempt to immortalize their scissors in cement for the Hollywood Walk of Fame. (Oddly, the segment didn’t take place on the Walk of Fame but in the arena?) Exactly the kind of dumb-fun you would expect from the segment.
  • In another goofy segment that quickly developed into chaos, Danhausen interrupted Renee Paquette‘s interview with Paul Walter Hauser only to be interrupted by Jeff Jarrett and his crew who were then interrupted by Orange Cassidy and the Best Friends. Most notable for Hauser getting some jibes in on Jarrett before taking a guitar shot.

Lows:

  • Backstage segment between Swerve and Renee (who is as lost as the rest of us about what the hell this faction is supposed to be).
  • A backstage pre-taped Book of Hobbs segment. No video here, just Powerhouse Hobbs warning he’s coming for the AEW roster. The fact that these haven’t led anywhere yet really feels like Hobbs is just spinning his wheels.

Less Notable:

  • The Kings of the Black Throne defeated the bickering team of Eddie Kingston and Ortiz who couldn’t ever get on the same page. Okay match which was undercut by a storyline that can be summarized in “House of Black fucking with people for no real reason and no gain.” It also doesn’t feel important to anyone involved.
  • Short backstage interview with Jade Cargill talking trash on Red Velvet.
