Alex Rider - Widow

Adapting events from the fifth novel, Alex Rider returns for its Third Season. We open with Alex (Otto Farrant) in Malta, along with Tom (Brenock O’Connor) and Kyra (Marli Siu), seeking the SCORPIA operative known as the Widow (Sofia Helin) and answers about his father. We get some new faces in this episode, some like Tom’s big brother Jay (Emmet Byrne), an extreme sports athlete, won’t play prominent roles in the season. However, our Widow will eventually provide Alex with more answers than he’s ready for.

Along with introducing Sofia Helin as the new head of the terrorist organization, “Widow” also teases us with SCORPIA’s new initiative codenamed “Invisible Sword” promising the ability to kill their enemies from halfway around the world without leaving a trace. The threat is both vague and threatening enough to allow the show to tease bits about the program before revealing just how it works.

The opener involves Kyra flexing her skills with a bit of computer magic and Jack (Ronke Adekoluejo) tracing a villa in Malta back through a byzantine group of shell companies leading to Alex getting a personal first look at the widow at a private art exhibit and a much closer look at this season’s main henchman (Jason Wong). The episode ends with another impossible escape, the Widow quickly guessing the identity of the young interloper, and setting the stage for his further interactions with SCORPIA over the course of the season.
