Danger Man - The Contessa television review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back into the Cold War spycraft of Danger Man. An injured dock worker in New York wearing a coat full of cocaine sends John Drake (Patrick McGoohan) to Genoa in search of the base of the smuggling operation. Following a sailor with a similar jacket leads him to a bar and, between getting drugged twice in one night while pretending to be an out-of-work sailor, a meeting with a Contessa (Hazel Court) who knows far more about her husband’s business than she first lets on. A second meeting with the Contessa, this time as a potential ally, ends with one of the pair not making it through the night.

Court works well as the episode’s femme fatale, who took over the operation from her now-deceased husband years ago and gets the drop on Drake multiple times over the course of the episode. While attempting to meet the Contessa’s husband, Drake begins to suspect who is actually in control of the operation long before the Contessa pulls a gun on him. A fake getaway and a shootout later, the Contessa takes some comfort at least in dying in Drake’s arms and not in the gutter where her husband found her.
