Glee - Movin' Out

As Blaine (Darren Criss) and Sam (Chord Overstreet) travel to New York for opportunities after graduation , Mr. Shue (Matthew Morrison) responds to the lack on representation of careers in the art at Sue‘s (Jane Lynch) hastily arranged McKinley High career fair to offer his students a lesson the the music and unlikely success story of Billy Joel. Of the single artist episodes Glee has done, “Movin’ Out” offers several strong musical performances as character in both Lima and New York belt out hits by the Piano Man.

When Sam’s college interview doesn’t go well, Rachel (Lea Michele) helps him embrace his dream of becoming a male model by calling on the help of a photographer friend (Wendle Josepher). Rachel’s obvious attraction for Sam is noticed by her friends, but the somewhat odd possible paring is not directly commented on. Meanwhile, Kurt (Chris Colfer) helps Blaine not psych himself out for his NYADA audition (which, oddly, occurs off-camera).

Other stories involve the fallout from Marley (Melissa Benoist) and Jake (Jacob Artist) break-up as Jake goes back to his bad boy ways and Ryder (Blake Jenner) makes a play for the newly-single girl he’s had a crush on for two years, and Artie (Kevin McHale) tries to convince Becky (Lauren Potter) to consider college (despite Sue’s initial objections). The Artie/Becky/Sue story is sweet and also uses the episode as an opportunity to offer a look at the different college programs available for those with mental disabilities.

Songs from the week include Sam and Blaine performing “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song),” Blaine performing “Piano Man,” Jake sings “My Life,” Artie performs “Honesty,” Rachel, Sam, Blaine, Kurt and Santana (Naya Rivera) perform “Just the Way You Are,” and Will leads the New Directions in a performance of “You May Be Right” to close out the episode.
