Murder at the aquarium is in the back-burner for an episode of Lucifer attempting to prove he should be his father’s successor. “Nothing Last Forever” offers a few surprises including the return of Mum (Tricia Helfer), the revelation that God (Dennis Haysbert) was never losing his powers, a shocking decision of God to leave with his wife without naming a successor, and the machinations of Michael taking shape including gathering support to rule Heaven and get his grubby hands on a particular item to cement his power (a subplot which will take an even darker turn in the next episode).

We get several of Lucifer’s siblings here, most of whom aren’t fond of the idea of him ascending to Heaven. It’s fun to finally see a bit more of this family tree explored, although there is a notable missing character not present for the proceedings. The theme of Lucifer attempting to win them over to his side will play into the final arc of the season. Other notable moments include God finally spending some time with Ella (Aimee Garcia), Lucifer surprising everyone with a bizarre double-date, Chloe struggling with the idea of dating God and what that might do to their relationship, and Lucifer hearing the words from his father he has been waiting eons for.
