MacGyver - SOS + Hazmat + Ultrasound + Frequency + Malihini television review

MacGyver introduces Robert Patrick as grizzled veteran spy, and mentor to Matty (Meredith Eaton), Ian Cain who Team MacGyver is sent in to rescue when the embassy goes dark. “SOS + Hazmat + Ultrasound + Frequency + Malihini” offers an interesting puzzle as MacGyver (Lucas Till) struggles to discover what made the entire embassy sick before uncovering a group using a sonic weapon to empty the embassy and steal Cold War tech in the building’s basement they hope to turn into a weapon of mass destruction. Patrick is well-cast here, in a role that he could do in his sleep, but he’s not the only guest-star of note.

In the episode’s other storyline, Bozer (Justin Hires) and Russ (Henry Ian Cusick) attempt to uncover a Codex cell with the help of Jorge Garcia reprising his role as Hawaii Five-0 conspiracy theorist Jerry Ortega. Although the rather risky plan of sending Jerry in undercover doesn’t nab the Phoenix Foundation any enemy spies, it does confirm the scope of Codex’s return foreshadowing a possible lengthy war with the group over the remainder of the season. While both stories work, each feels a bit rushed (as if we were looking at an A-story from two separate episodes that were combined for a single episode). Jerry fits in well with show’s B-team, and, like Cain, the show leaves the door open for his possible return.
