Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - Face My Enemy

Discovering another example of the alien writing (on the back of a “miracle painting”) which drove Garrett insane and continues to obsess Coulson (Clark Gregg), the team’s leader and May hit a swanky party to make off with the artwork but don’t count on HYDRA having similar plans. With HYDRA’s big guns recently taken out by Coulson’s team, they are forced to use more delicate methods by replacing Talbot (Adrian Pasdar) and later May to get the painting and learn more about the new S.H.I.E.L.D. by adopting mask technology from the 80s Mission: Impossible TV-series leading to some memorable May-on-May action.

Helping to save his friends from the gifts Agent 33 (Maya Stojan) left behind on the bus while disguised as May, “Face My Enemy” continues Fitz‘s (Iain De Caestecker) slow struggle into becoming part of the team despite his speech impediment and Simmons‘ (Elizabeth Henstridge) departure. The episode also brings up May’s reluctance to create or follow a contingency plan if Coulson goes crazy like Garrett. And, in a reveal not discussed afterwards, Agent 33 learns the name of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s new director laying the foundation for new trouble for Coulson and his team from the terrorist organization.

Pasdar, whether as the real or fake Gen. Talbot, is proving to be one of the show’s more enjoyable supporting characters. HYDRA stories continue to dominate the series and I’m beginning to wonder if it will take the release of another Marvel film to once again alter the show’s path (as it seems Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is destined to always play with last year’s toys). Although he appears only in the episode’s epilogue Daniel Whitehall (Reed Diamond) continues to make his presence felt through his brainwashed agents and by tracking down Raina (Ruth Negga) and demanding the return of the 084. The short encounter between the two sets up next week episode and a possible family reunion for Skye (Chloe Bennet) as soon as next week.
