“To Protect and Serve” brings back Da’Vine Joy Randolph as the grumpy Detective Williams. While I’m not wild about the character, her discovery that the police department didn’t look further into the evidence of Tim Kono’s apparent suicide, and the needling from her fiancé (Alysha Deslorieux), pushes her to helping out the podcast she despises by sending them a big clue. Speaking of the podcasters, still wrapping their heads around Tim’s investigation into black market jewelry, Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short) stumble across unexpected boost to their podcast and a new suspect.

The other interesting aspect of the episode is the introduction Mandy Gonzalez of as Mabel’s (Selena Gomez) mother who isn’t pleased about her daughter falling back into old obsessions, and a bit confused by Mabel’s new choices in friends. Despite her mother’s concerns, or possibly because of them, Mabel discovers that she genuinely cares about Charles and Oliver and needs to see the mystery to its conclusion if she’s ever going to come to peace with the past. Armed with a clue as to what Tim was searching for when he died, a new suspect, a locked phone which may hold answers, and some unexpected publicity boosting the podcast’s viewership, and it looks like the game may be afoot.
