As the first season of Political Animals comes to an end (so much for being a “limited series event”) Elaine (Sigourney Weaver) is hit from all sides as news of her resignation is leaked to the press, President Garcetti (Adrian Pasdar) asks her once again to consider becoming his Vice President, and Douglas (James Wolk) comes clean to his mother about telling Susan (Carla Gugino) about her plans to run against Garcetti.

As Elaine mulls over Garcetti’s offer and Susan tries to put the genie back in the bottle by convincing her editor (Dan Futterman) not to run the story, the country is rocked by the news that the President of the United States is presumed dead in a plane crash. Vice President Collier (Dylan Baker) takes on the Presidential powers and responsibilities under Section IV of the 25th Amendment until the President’s body can be found.

The episode comes to a close with the rest of the Hammond family tracking down and crashing Douglas and Anne’s (Brittany Ishibashi) elopement and Bud (Ciarán Hinds) challenging Elaine to run again now that the country is stuck with one of the slimiest members of the Democratic Party as the President of the United States.

A lukewarm first season comes to an end with an unexpected twist that (not surprisingly) puts off any of the characters making real decisions until Political Animals returns for a second season. We’re still stuck with the ongoing soap opera of the various members of the Hammond family but, at least for now, the friendship between Elaine and Susan seems to have stabilized. Here’s hoping with Elaine gearing up for the campaign next season the show gives us a little more dirty politics and a lot less soap.
