When the hitting coach of the local minor league baseball team turns up dead from an overdose of amphetamines Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dulé Hill) are hired by the longtime manager (Danny Glover) to investigate. However, the investigation takes a dark turn when Shawn realizes his childhood idol (Michael Trucco) may be the murderer.

Shawn’s unique investigative style creates a full bench clearing brawl in the middle of an afternoon games and leaves the team in chaos and another member of the squad (Ken Luckey) dead. Finding himself fired and the man who hired him arrested for double murder Shawn comes up with a new plan to find the real killer.

The episode has several fun moments including the players consistently taking Shawn to be the new towel boy instead of assistant coach or his accidental ingestion of speed which leaves his gifts in overdrive. Then there is Gus’ undercover assignment… as the team’s mascot. The funniest moment, however, comes late in the episode when borrows the costume and breaks into the stadium. The scene ends with the mascot running roughshod over the place while trying to make an escape. It’s all the more humorous knowing Gus will be blamed for the entire thing.

The show amps up the zaniness to eleven and delivers a thoroughly enjoyable episode. Although we get very little of Juliet (Maggie Lawson) and Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) we do get an appearance by Wade Boggs (as himself), Shawn’s one shot at making the minor leagues, a petulant Henry (Corbin Bernsen),  and a very nice Silk Stalkings. Well played, Mr. Spencer.
