When Gus (Dulé Hill) falls for a witness (Diora Baird) to a murder Shawn (James Roday) and his love struck partner find themselves hiding out in the woman’s cult while trying to piece together what’s really go on (other than the fact Gus has fallen for what by all accounts looks to be yet another crazy woman).

Juliet (Maggie Lawson) and Lassiter’s (Timothy Omundson) investigation into the murder doesn’t produce a body but it does turn up a mission Internal Affairs officer a dirty cop (Stephen Locke). However, it turns out the person trying to kill Nicole is actually part of the commune which Gus is quickly becoming infatuated with.

The episode includes some nice guest-appearances including Diedrich Bader stars as the cult’s leader Eli and Carlos Jacott (who Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel should recognize from multiple roles) as Nicole’s ex-husband and member of the commune.

“The Tao of Gus” plays on themes well-established in the show including Gus’ gullibility and his obsession with crazy women. The mystery itself, which really isn’t anything special, takes a back seat to the episode’s unique setting as we watch Shawn try and save his best bud from becoming one of the children of the corn (or “dirty hippies” as Lassiter refers to them). It’s one of the season’s weaker episodes, but does provide some typical Psych-inspired lunacy fans should enjoy.
