Throwback Thursday takes us back to a con man pretending to be the world’s greatest detective in Remington Steele. After the opening sequence involving a bank robbery from the Federal Reserve by a nervous employee, only to find the money stolen, the First Season finale begins with Remington Steele (Pierce Brosnan) preventing poor Alfred (John Doolittle) from ending his own life by jumping off a bridge. Early attempts by Steele and Laura (Stephanie Zimbalist) to find the money only to further disappointing revelations such as the woman he was stealing the woman (Gina Gallego) for was using him and the boss who gave him a promotion to be put in the proper position was the brains behind the heist.

“Steele in Circulation” is a complicated story that breezes by with Steele and Laura spending as much time finding the truth as preventing Alfred from ending his own life (at least up until someone starts shooting at him, making Alfred realize he does want to live). In his last appearance on the show Murphy’s (James Read) one-night stand with a stewardess (Patsy Pease) turns into something more as the pair get dragged into the case which allows for her various skills to come in handy and eventually involves breaking into the Federal Reserve. It’s one of the better uses of his character and sends him off to possibly begin his own adventures. Although she only appears in the epilogue, getting caught up in the insanity her co-workers got into over the weekend, Janet DeMay does make one final appearance as Bernice Foxe to be present for the wrap-up of the episode and the tease that Steele and Laura’s relationship may move to the next level when the show returns the next season.
