Rookie Blue - Blink

Picking up where last season’s cliffhanger left off, Swarek (Ben Bass) is rushed to the hospital following the shooting inside the precinct which further rocks Andy‘s (Missy Peregrym) world after seeing Chloe (Priscilla Faia) shot in front of her by the same shooter. After Chloe wakes from surgery asking for her husband (Clé Bennett), the exhausted and emotionally conflicted pair of Epstein (Gregory Smith) and Andy find their attempted break at diner down the street interrupted by a holdup by unstable couple (Adam Butcher, Jessica Greco). The busy season opener barely takes time to breathe while putting several members of 15 Division through the ringer in a quick-paced season premiere filled with strong moments including Oliver‘s (Matt Gordon) attempts to cheer Chloe up when Epstein is nowhere to be found.

The drama continues elsewhere as an outside investigator (Oliver Becker) has more than a few questions about what happened in 15 Division that night which he blames on Best‘s (Lyriq Bent) questionable leadership. With news of her sexuality out and everyone she knows in the hospital or caring for someone who is, Gail (Charlotte Sullivan) has a complete meltdown which is only calmed by Holly after her girlfriend has cut off most of her hair in a fit of drunken depression. The uncontrollable events of the night also put extra pressure on Nash (Enuka Okuma) whose ex-husband threatens to sue for sole custody of their son (Drew Davis), a storyline likely to slowly play out over the course of the season.

The Fifth Season premiere deals mostly with the turmoil of the shootings and laying the foundation for both professional and personal shakeups in the weeks to come beginning with the end of Andy and Nick‘s (Peter Mooney) relationship. Despite the amount of time paid to Nick missing in action while hunting down Swarek’s sister (Stacey Farber) there’s not much in the way of payoff for any repurcussion for him or in the reunion between the pair of estranged siblings either here or in the following episode. When all is said and done the tragedy brings Swarek and Andy back together and, despite both a meddling husband and blood clot in her brain, Epstein and Chloe weather the storm as well.
