Wednesday - You Reap What You Woe

Parents Weekend brings a family therapy session for the Addams and the return of Gozmez (Luis Guzmán) to town for the first time since his graduation from Nevermore Academy. Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) confronts both parents about the murder that occurred which allows for some flashbacks to events. The sudden apparent suicide of the coroner leaving an auspicious note about that murder case from long ago also gives Sheriff Galpin (Jamie McShane) the excuse he’s been looking for to finally arrest Gomez Addams for murder.

The episode is most notable for the arrival of the family to the school and Wednesdays interactions with each of them. A little sleuthing gets the truth out of Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), provides more flashbacks, brings the truth of the murder to light, and brings mother and daughter closer together than the have in years. The episode also sees Wednesday showing some sympathy for Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez) with their father in jail, including some Addams Family style fishing (which is only slightly more entertaining than the mother/daughter outing Wednesday does with her mother later that night). Given the structure of the show we haven’t seen much of these siblings together, but it is one of my favorite relationships on the show.

The episode brings the family back together for an episode, offers Wednesday an opportunity to solve a mystery involving her parents, and puts to rest any question of the murder which her father was accused. Family is the thread that weaves its way into other B-stories as well as both Enid (Emma Myers) and Bianca (Joy Sunday) deal with their complicated mothers. While this gives the characters something to do, and pushes the theme of family a bit stronger in the episode, the B-plots are mostly filler taking time away from the far more interesting developments of Wednesday and her family.
