To prevent an exiled Romanian general from returning to his home country and using some recently purchased nerve gas to regain his power, Will (Scott Foley) and Frankie (Lauren Cohan) go undercover as a married couple and guests at the wedding of his daughter (Erika Kaar), who is blissfully unaware the her groom is actually an undercover agent (Joe Doyle). The mission runs into obstacles when the target remains apart from all the pre-wedding activities and Frankie’s trouble with playing a loving wife (including an “affair” on their fake marriage that brings up trust issues for her partner). Despite the tension, the two are able to sell their marriage with the help of a convincing kiss, more convincing than either may have expected.
In terms of the scorecard between the pair, Will earns a couple points here both for being right about true love and his pure joy at Frankie being forced to join the wedding party as a last-minute bridesmaid (after the pair of them kill the original, an assassin who recognized Will). As we’ve seen in the previous episodes of the series, much of “Mrs. & Mr. Trowbridge” is centered around the team’s dysfunction. Along with the on-again/off-again friction between Will and Frankie, there’s also Susan’s (Ana Ortiz) disappointment at being excluded from the trip and more bickering between Standish (Tyler James Williams) and Prince (Josh Hopkins). While still mostly fluff, these scenes are handled somewhat better this week as Whiskey Cavalier continues to try and find its rhythm in the series’ early episodes.
