“Sudden Fear” picks up the thread of Harleen Quinzel (Jamie Chung) who we learn Renee Montoya (Michelle C. Bonilla) has been hiding in her apartment following the psychiatrist’s apparent death. When an interesting case hits Montoya’s desk about a series of college students being scared to death, a stir-crazy Harleen throws back her old costume and even teams up with Batman (Hamish Linklater) to find the maker of the fear toxin.
Teasing us a little suggesting the expected character hiding behind the mask might not be Jonathan Crane (Josh Brener), “Sudden Fear” eventually reveals he is the madman behind the experiments targeting those part of Professor Burton’s (Robin Atkin Downes) inner circle who are all tied the experiments that created the toxin. The episode marks the end of Montoya and Quinzel’s secret love affair, but not perhaps the last time we’ve seen the good doctor.
Despite his initial distrust of Quinzel, Batman chooses to work with her and use expertise which comes in handy in terms of not only leading them to the Scarecrow (in an intriguing redesign of a plague mask rather than the comic character’s more traditional garb) but also coming up with a way to limit its effect on the fly. However, Batman has his own method for conquering fear (followed by a moment of Scarecrow getting a taste of his own medicine that feels very much pulled from Batman Begins).
