The Season Two finale sees Gotham ripping itself apart as the Joker‘s (Matthew Needham) monsters attack both friends and foe alike. While others struggle to stay alive (and uninfected), and Alfred (Jason Watkins), keenly aware of its effects, works on a cure, we get the big face-to-face confrontation between our antagonist and Batman (Hamish Linklater) and learn all the chaos is nothing more than the Joker attempting to teach, who he sees as a kindred soul, an important lesson.
Bruce Timm’s decision to go a bit old school in this version of the Joker, far unlike anything seen in animation, other than perhaps the epically bad adaptation of The Killing Joke, has divided some of the series’ fanbase. This version of the Joker, more sinister than outrageous, but still equally insane, works for the story the show builds to. Although, I don’t know that limiting his appearance to only two episodes does the season arc any favors.
