One of 10 films produced by Roger Corman in Argentina in the 1980s, The Warrior and the Sorceress is a thinly-veiled retelling of Yojimbo on an alien world (featuring the most modest of fantasy or sci-fi trappings). More sword than sorcery, the story opens with Kain (David Carradine), a former holy warrior turned mercenary, wandering into the village of Yamatar where the most precious resource is a well fought over by two warring gangs.

Set in the weeks following the events of the 1984 film, Mad Cave Studios’ new series The Last Starfighter checks in on Alex Rogan living on Rylos with his girlfriend Maggie. As the comic opens, Alex and Grig are charged with rebuilding the Star League and Starfighter Command by finding new pilots to battle the Ko-Dan Armada and new threat of the Blackstars. As for Maggie, she gets a new role as well working alongside Centauri to bring in the new recruits.

The 4th of July takes us back for a patriotic mystery involving some meddling kids and their talking dog. Created 50 years ago for the Bicentennial, “The Spirits of ’76” takes Mystery, Inc. to Washington D.C. where they spend a night locked in the Splitsonian Institute which has become haunted by the ghosts of Benedict Arnold, William Demont, and Major André (all three notorious traitors of American history). They may not be the most memorable baddies from Scooby-Doo, but the episode does attempt to use the ghosts and the museum to teach viewers a little American history.

Akira Kurosawa knew how to tell stories that last. The simple story of a ronin (Toshirō Mifune) wandering into a small town and causing chaos to solve a larger problem has been remade, adapted, and inspired dozens (if not hundreds) of projects over the years from spaghetti westerns to samurai science fiction. My favorite, however, has always been Stan Sakai‘s Usagi Yojimbo which owes much to Kurosawa’s tale.
